    wolfgang,
a gs300 isn't bad but not in the ls's class the IS is a sports saloon so quietness isn;t the point. if you want a quiet classic i'm afraid rolls and bentley are probably going to be it - maybe a bristol if you can find one.
generally the bigger the car the quieter.
alternatively get yourself a load of accoustic damping material such as 'brown bread' - (google it) and put that into the doors, boot and anywhere else near the bulkhead etc. that you can and that'll quieten the car down a lot.
    cheers

I think that Lexus are great cars, however I cant get excited enough about them to want to buy one though.

    robbo,
i can understand your sentiments they aren't 'exciting' cars but what they do they do very well. if i'm ever in the position to be able to afford to run one again i wouldn't hesitate to get another.
has anyone driven the new twin turbo diesel s type?
    cheers

I'd love to have a test drive in one of those, especially now they make an estate. With two dogs saloons just aren't practical. The wife says they're old mens cars which I find worrying though.

My best mate bought an RX300 SEL (Lexus's 4x4 / yuppie wagon vehicle) instead of a BMW X5 or a VW Touareg (largely on the basis of cost I might add) and he seems happy with it. I find it soooooo booooooring though. The centre console panel and switches are all really cheap plastic and look like they were laid out with a splatter gun. It has absolutely no "get up and go" either allthough he's on a waiting list for the petrol/electric hybrid RX400h version which is supposed to be much better in that respect.

Now they've just had a kid it's mostly his wife who drives it and he's remedied the boredom situation with a Mini Cooper S :JPS: - now that is a desirable car, nice one BMW :)

I'll give Lexus a couple of points though: their no nonsense options policy (there aren't any, they all come as standard) and extremely friendly and completely non-pushy salesmen are pretty refreshing for the industry.

    Michael.

Because in both cases you sacrifice the important bit - true out and out performance.

Streuth you should read HFN this month. Two people starting crossovers to subs at 100hz and ending up between 250hz and 325hz. Wierd huh ;)

    michael,
yup i'd pretty much agree that the rx and is are not the best in their fields, mainly because they're blinged up toyotas. i specificly went for one of the origional ls 400's as these were the cars that lexus used to build their reputation with. they were built to be pretty much indestructable. later versions were succesively lightened and given more power thus compromising their reliability and refinement (still better than most things out there though) for example if the origional snaps it cam belt you just put another one on and keep going. most other cars will lunch the valves. in the quest for more power this was lost in later models. the interior was very well put together with wood trim from the yamaha piano factory and most things covered in cow. if you want a car that is relaxing to drive and yet can turn into an animal when you press the loud pedal then i'd certainly take a look at an ls 400 mk1.
    cheers

The top one anyday! I am a sucker for that 1970s 'The Sweeney' look. Even better would be a 1974 Ford Consul

This is undoubtedly one of the nicest things about driving a BMW. Mid-corner bumps & irregularities are dismissed with utter contempt.
