Actually on more extensive listening to Raising Sand I think that the first few tracks, both Robert and Alison sound tentative (what I mean is restrained a bit)

The tracks closer to the end of the album sound much better and do more justice to Alisons voice - in earlier tracks she is almost like a back-up singer

I'm more of a fan of Alison Krauss than Robert Plant (you may have guessed :))

    Artist - Shpongle
    Album - Are you shpongled?
Stand out track - Divine moments of truth

What is it? Trippy trance that oscialltes between psytrance and ambient trance, mixing progressive beats with traditional instruments and folk-music. Fortunately shpongle are rather talented and the result is engaging, not pretentious. Its worth a listen if you are into chilled out dance music, and is a fun soundtrack for, ah, recreational activities.

Having bought Raising Sand awhile ago, i found it to be overrated
IMHO of course. However the thing that bothered me most was the trully awful compressed sound. A lot of people have said this is well recorded but to me its awful.

Has any one found variations in the quality of this cd from other countries? My copy was from the UK.

    Regards D Louth

I enjoy Essence and play it quite often. I also play "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road". I find her first album really interesting and it is one of my favourites - quite different from her more recent albums. It is called Ramblin' and well worth a listen. IMO of course

    electronica recommendations

Highly advisable albums at the moment in the electronica vein:

The new Kaya Project album on Interchill records, the Hibernation album on Aleph Zero, Rena Jones, Recue, 'Ketri' by Lumin on Dakini records, 'Contact note' by Jon hopkins on Just Music (very good label)

The Kaya Project and Hibernation albums are actually by the same guy, Seb Taylor, a ludicrously talented and prolific guy.

Worth noting that the Kaya Project album might also be categorised as a world-music type release. It is a hybrid that I think would appeal to fans of either genre.

I give you two of my favourite albums - Rickie Lee Jones (eponymous) and 'Highway' by Free.
We use the former to test out new equipment cos we like it and because the inflections of her voice are amazing and reward for spending more money (not so 'Easy Money').
Free (whom I saw live in Manchester many moons ago) had a terrific blues based Rock line up and are superbly 'sparse' and together here..

The Matches, Saves the Day, and currently Run Kid Run.

Try Run Kid Run's album, Love at the Core. It's really good.

Empire of the Sun - "Walking on a Dream". Fantastic!
Fleet Foxes - "Fleet Foxes/Sun Giant E.P." Still can't stop listening to this, amazing!
Clint Mansell - "Moon OST". Great atmospheric tuneage.
We were promised jetpacks - "These four walls". Cracking stuff.

Don't blame me if you don't like it!

Although you have to admire an album that can get away with a track called "Swordfish Hotkiss Night" :)

Someone might find this unusal artist interesting:

I do and bought her album Miss America along with another from a Canadian contemporary of hers that I admire, Jane Siberry- Maria. Both are pretty quirky but have lovely instruments that they use expressively. Siberry is more melodic.
