The BBC Proms got underway today and we can look forward to hundreds of hours of superb, FREE music courtesy of Auntie.

So, if you don't have one, get yourselves over to eBay and snap up one of those vintage 70s Japanese tuners.

    Come along, chop chop! :)

Or better yet get a ticket!

I always intend to go but never find anything I want to hear by the time I look for tickets. What would you guys recommend? I like large orchestra stuff, romantic period. I'd love to hear Mahler’s 2nd or Rachmaninoff's 2nd piano concerto. I think I have a thing for 2's!

    I would recommend then:

    in July
    - Thu 20th Prokovief / Schostakowich
    - Sun 23th Elgar / Bliss / Walton
    - Thu 27th Schumann / Mahler

    in August
    - Fri 4th Ravel / Szymanowsky / Berlioz (!)
    - Sun 13th Ravel / Musorgsky
    - Wed 16th Bartok / Stravinsky
    - Fri 18th Schostakovich / Schnittke (!!!)
    - Sat 19th Shostakovich / Sibelius / Lyadov (!!)
    - Thu 24th Mahler (!)
    - Tue 29th Shostakovich

    in September
    - 2nd Szymanowsky / Bruckner (!)
    - Sun 3rd Beethoven's 9th (!)
    - Mon 4th Beethoven / Tschaikowsky
    - Wed 6th Mahler 2nd (!!!)

So you see there is some Mahler but also Shostakovich's music needs a very large orchestra. The 9th of Beethoven is always a great thing to hear live. Then there is also the "Symphonie Fantastique" (Berlioz), Bruckner's symphonies, "Pictures at an exhibition" (Musorgsky-Ravel) which also need a large orchestra.
So, you see, there is enough to be there a lot of times...

I was really disappointed with the shoddy engineering on tonights prom. Some bits with just the flute and harp playing together were louder than the climax. I'm really hoping this was a blip rather than a sad sign that Aunty has gone to the dark side and is using compression. Sadly after last night I fear the worst.
It sounded like a great performance, but it was robbed of all drama.
I thought the soprano was terrible in the Mozart, really un Mozartian singing, but suited the Dvorak much better.
There'll be better to come I'm sure
