    Re: Chaps

I think, at the end of the day, "amused" is probably your best bet.

After all, in the not-too-humorous world of hi-fi, it is quite funny.

Where is tones with his golden ear trumpet when you need him?

...or buried deep in the depths of the classical department of Musik Hug, Bahnhofstrasse, Zürich.

Funny you should mention horns, Titian, currently playing is a nice bit of horn, a vinyl of the Ace of Space Himself, Maurice André, playing a Haydn trumpet concerto (no, not THE Haydn trumpet concerto, an adaption for trumpet of an oboe concerto - only a player like André could pull it off).

Yes that happened to me, spotted it the next day whilst wondering when the bass was going to arrive!

I found a copy of "Give yourself a stereo workout" it's on Decca and cost me 50p in the local charity shop.

My wife thought me mad sitting through such wonderous tracks as "my voice is coming from the left speaker" or indeed "now my voice has moved to the left speaker and i'm here with a very pretty girl". However the "my voice is recorded in phase" section has made the time I spent looking like the worst kind of hifi nutter seem strangely worthwhile...

    Mick,

I don't want to kick a man when he's down, but this revelation does throw some of your observations about hi-fi into some sort of stark relief, does it not?

    All the best, y'old rogue!

I remember reading WM's 'review' of Mick's system and staring at the screen in disbelief when he described the Briks as not having enough bass, this revelation goes along way to explain matters. I had previously assumed that our WM's idea of a flat frequency response was with his head stuck in the bass bin at a dub reggae gig / drug dealers BMW…

Don't knock this stuff, Jools, I use them too! I have the "Gramophone" one of St. John Borwick for vinyl and one (name forgotten) for CD. There are some types of classical where distinguishing in phase and out of phase is not so easy, so I always run a check if anything has been changed.

Does this mean I have to check the phase of the ATCs too? They were also described by WM as lacking bass.

Maybe WM is wired out of phase.

Actually your speakers are a bit odd on the imaging front.

And it's possible they're wired out of phase, given they have a balanced input....

(Just scratching away at the devil's paranoia demon)

OK Paul I'll bite. [They sound absolutely AOK to me and most others - even on the dreaded imaging front. The image is in fact much larger than most people are used to, I think.]

What's the quickest way to check? Play Mono?

An enlarged image is indeed symptomatic of one speaker wired out of phase.

Find a female vocalist that you like. Sit up facing the speakers so that you and they form an equilateral triangle, there's a good boy.

Now, is she focused and smack between your speakers singing to you and only you intimately and seductively?

Does that bass guitar (assuming there is one) go really deep and seem to be under the speakers?

If the answers to the above Qs are no then you may have phase issues. :JOEL:

Hi Steve, thanks for the advice. I suspect Mr Ranson is on a wind-up...

The image is very large because the room and speakers are very large.

    Re: Chaps

And to think that you still pretend that you know what to listen for and that any comments re the audio attributes of your favourite brand are "childish" Mick:D

I would have thought anyone who cannot hear something as downright obvious as an out of phase speaker might very well be happy with any old shit to listen to.

Maybe you want to get some experience before coming on this forum and pretending to have any idea of what you are talking about honey:D You see I told you my argement was way over your head. This little revelation only goes to prove it I feel!

Don't be mean to Mick Parry and his choice of hi-fi.

It's just a phase he's going through. Geddit? Just a 'phase'?

    Oh, never mind...

Oh damn, just realised all those bass problems I had were because the bloody speakers were in phase with each other. Now have them out and its a revelation. None of that crappy imaging, no bass, its just like a proper pair of Kans!

    Cheers

I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that you are somewhat intellectually challanged.

Your comments about Naim where pure drivel. You logic was what one would expect from a school boy essay.

You now come in saying that because I did not detect an out of phase speaker, I am unqualified to say anything. One could be a genius and still be unable to detect an out of phase speaker.

The point I am making is that despite one speaker being out of of phase, it impressed many people, not all of whom, owned Naim.

Even a dealer thought it was good.

I really do suggest you think twice before hitting the key board. There is nothing wrong with you disliking the Naim sound, but your comments about Naim and its users just make you look unobjective. Just say you dont like the sound which is perfectly ok.

What I will conceed, is that the system has gone several notches up since being wired up correctly.

    Regards

    Mick

    mike,
is there any objective way to tell if your speakers are out of phase - without ripping them apart? i plead ignorance here not cloth ears and hope that you can enlighten me - seriously. as micks system seems to have fooled a number of people i'd say that this is a phenomenon whos symptoms aren;t fully understood by many.
    cheers
