I've just broken the stylus on my beloved Ortofon Rohmann MC cartridge.

Any suggestions? :yikes:  :yikes:  :yikes:

    Shoot yourself!

Seriously, that's a bummer. Bad luck.

If you have a spare £500 you can get a replacement from Germany. Certainly cheaper than buying one in the UK. Failing that, the Expert Stylus Company or Len Gregory, the Cartridge Man, should be able to rebuild it. It may not sound the same when you get it back however, it's a risk you take.

£500 eh? Anyone want to buy a kidney?

I thought I might resort to the old 'phone up Ortofon (in Denmark) and plead - need it for hi-fi shows, etc.' It may be worth a try. I'll let you know.

Failing that, do you have details of who sells them in Germany, Ian?

This should serve as an important lesson to us all. I bought the cartridge for £200 with 100 hours on the clock. I didn't see what could go wrong. How was I to know I'd get addicted to the thing?

Not now Robbo. I'm in no mood for humour right now. We're talking MUSIC here not clever mathematics.

Steve, surely after the hifi+ article the old mungha must be rushing in, I think you should get something big and expensive.

Tony if Steve is a no go can I have a play?

Gosh, gee thanks Tone. "I'll be your best friend" - unless someone else offers a Urishi Signature ;)

No seriously, thanks. This is one not a happy bunny this evening.

I'll PM you the address. He's legit, good to deal with (he sent mine before he even had the payment), sells the whole Ortofon range at about half the UK price. Hope you sort something out. I'd be gutted if my Rohmann died on me, I know exactly how you feel.

I'd claim on the contents aswell.

Just think what the German chappy could offer with a full insurance settlement of 1k!!!

..other than that Id try a re-build for about 150 from Len. Or get a quote etc.

Ouch! Sorry to hear about the Rohmann, Steve. :(

150? That sounds quite reasonable, would that price include a new cantilever too?

Almost 2 years to the day, I snapped the cantilever clean off my Vdh Frog cart  . It was definitely more economical for me to get a rebuild rather than buy a new cart. Sent the Frog back to Vdh HQ for a new boron cantilever and tip, cost was £250 all in. The re-built article doesn't sound any different to the original to my ears. :)

MC carts are great, but if you're really accident prone it's probably best sticking to a high-end MM instead - at least you can easily replace the stylus/cantilever on an MM.

    Priceless Chris.

Who would have thought I'd have a good chuckle on a tragic night like this? :D :D :D

Sorry to hear that, Steve - I feel your pain.

I might not have as an expensive cartridge as either the Rohmann or the Frog, but I had a worse accident.

I wrote off my Dynavector 10x4 Gold High. OK, so it's only £229, but it was one of only 50 in the known universe. Gutted.

If the cost's reasonable, I'd consider getting mine retipped. It *had* :( a boron cantilever; I've never ever found it - one minute it was there, and the next, it wasn't. D'oh!

MM's are much safer, though I would like another MC one day - preferrably sooner than later ;)

Steve, sorry to hear about the Rohmann. :(

Think positively, though, take the occasion to get something much better. :D

Of all the bits in my system, apart from the speakers, the Rohmann was my favourite - prime candidate for "least likely update". I find it so damn musical.

Which direction would you recommend for better?

Sorry to hear about your tragedy, also. FWIW, I'd also recommend a household insurance claim to recoup your loss - that is what insurance is for, after all - and a new purchase from the guy in Germany that sideshowbob has mentioned. I got my Kontrapunkt from him and he was a very friendly and efficient - and cheap! - seller.

    Steve,
It was one of my silly jokes.
    :duck:

If you had the possibility and you would be wiling to pay £1500 I could reccomend a cartridge which can compete against the top of the line Clearaudio. If you were interested then I could also bring mine along over for a demo.
But I think it is a too high budget especially thinking that today everybody is concentrating on CDs and maybe the turntable cost even less!
