I'm still in a state of beffudleness over my choice of arm for my soon-to-arrive Spacedeck. I can't afford to stretch to a Spacearm but am seriously torn between a Tecno or this new-fangled Roksan Nima thingy. Bearing in mind the Nima's a unipivot (like the Spacey) I'm wondering if it'll gel with the NAS better than the Tecno.

I know the Tecno will work ok, it's just that I'd like to keep my options reasonably open - they both use the Rega mount so it'll be no problem making the decision last-minute.

Or should I just phone Tom Fletcher??? :)

    Cheers all,

    Richard.

Tom Fletcher is bound to just reccomend the NAS.

Try calling a few NAS dealers - Definitive Audio (www.definitiveaudio.co.uk), MAX (www.midlandaudioxchange.co.uk), Audio Consultants (Reading), Walrus (although the level of attention they pay to telephone callers is poor IME)

Im sure the techno arm or any good unipivot would be fine

    Decisions Decisions!

Thanks guys - when (rather than if) I ring Tom I'll state as clearly as I can that I can't really stretch to a Spacearm - much as I'd like to of course.

Rega-based arms are something I've become quite familiar with over the years, so they're very much a known quantity - the fact that Tom's arm is a unipivot, in common with the Nima, does make the Roksan slightly tempting though. Or maybe I should judge each arm on its own merits rather than any swaying to one particular 'camp' or another.

Since I haven't heard the Nima on anything other than the Radius I can't say what it would be like compared to anything else.

All I will say is that unipivots aren't as plug'n'play as most other arm, needing the counterweight to be offset to make sure it is perpendicular to the LP. However according to HiFi World it is worth the effort. They love the Hadcock, but thought the Nima excellent VFM, saying they both had a certain something over and above the other arms on test, including an OL silver .

Thanks Lee - it seems (if many people are to be believed) that with unipivots, what they lose in 'kapow' factor, they gain in musical subtlety. My system's quite up-front (apart from the cartridge) so I'm wondering if something like the Nima might just be a good match.

Is it just me or does the Nima look rather similar to the Naim Aro?

Tom - glad it's not just me then. :D

Yup, colour the acrylic in black and yes, one very Aro-looking arm.

    Nima Reviews

I found a number of Nima reviews cleverly concealed within write-ups of the Radius 5 turntable with which it's usually partnered. Pay particuliar attention to the HiFi World review where the Nima is compared to the OL-1 ("fully" modded RB-250).
