There's one on eBay at present: Spacedeck, Ace Spacearm, Tracer3 Cart, £750 start with 0 bids, 2 days left. I don't do the Bay thing but looks reasonable enough, so am I missing something?

What sort of prices do these go for?

[No intention of bidding just trying to get my eye in at this stage]

I would imagine the seller is trying to play the fine line between a starting price that doesn't put people off bidding and that, worst case, he would settle for. He will probably hope for £1K+ given the retail of circa £1.5K excluding cartridge. don't know the price of the latter.

I think the general scarcity of them on the used market means you don't have to take a bath on the Spacedeck at resale time. Spacearms are a bit different given that a whole bunch of arms can be used to one's taste.

The spacedeck is probably an easier sell than the Spacearm if he were to separate them. I might be totally wrong on all of this of course.

The one on eBay is an ealier spec Space which is possibly putting the punters off - current ones have a far thicker platter.

Was just about to say what Tony said (I ought to be quicker!). 2.3k sounds a bit ott for all the 'new' parts aswell - taking the price of the NAS & Spacearm would mean the Tracer is 800 quid??

Now don't you be giving me platter envy  I've got the SLIGHTLY thinner older platter and believe me it does it for Auntie ;) and its still heavy enough you wouldn't want to drop it on yer toe.

Seriously though, I'd have thought mebbe £900 or £950 would be about right - the slightly older platter but the latest arm. The Tracer 3 is actually quite pricey I think - up in the £400/£500 sort of region - but I don't think that'd be so tempting for many buyers as its a pretty unknown quantity (it didn't take me long to loathe the Tracer 1)

See where it goes. If it went for say £900 with the arm I'd still say its good bang for yer buck.

No bids currently I suspect because he's started the bidding too high - a smart ebayer would have started it much lower to build some excitement - either that or all the smart buyers are hiding in the bushes waiting for a last minute snipe.

If it actually went for £750 then someone has got a bargain.

I'd say it was a stunning deck for that. A good dig round Audio Asylum implies that not everyone thought the thicker platter better, but these things always effect value a bit.

    Tony.

(whose Space is 'thicker' and 'more ribbed' than Uncle Ant's ;))

I'm also watching that Spacedeck on eBay.
What are the pointers to the age of the deck, and what major modifications to the deck and arm have been made?
I know the earlier version of the Spacearm had an alloy as opposed to C/F tube, and I've seen mention of a slight change to the bearing, but when did these occur?

Is it fair to say that NAS decks are a 'relatively' good bet second hand as they are less prone to tinkering (ie other peoples mods) than some other brands, and that they either work or don't?
The (possibly) tricky bit appearing to be that there is a continuous upgrade policy in regard to exact spec - not new models as such, but things change gradually and to the untrained eye (ie me) knowing exactly what you are looking at is not so easy.

Uncle Ants - Did I read somewhere that you had dispensed with the plinth from yours?

    Interesting auction ...

The sellers guide price of £2300 is over the top though, a current Spacedeck is £890 (from Walrus), the AceSpace is about £580 and the Tracer 3 is no more than £600 (possibly closer to £400!).

But the starting price of £750 is not bad given that the arm is the greatly improved current version. I'd expect more than a couple of bidders will have a little bite at this deck over the weekend, good luck to them all!
    ;)

You did. I found it a bit big and ugly (and that's an understatement of Auntie's view) and Tom Fletcher's view is its unnecessary so long as you site it on something reasonably isolated and massy (homemade isolation platforms of wood, ply, MDF, HDF with rubber feet, heavy wooden furniture etc, were all deemed suitable). I can detect no major difference with or without and it certainly looks a lot more svelte without. Lets face it faux blue and black marble isn't going to be to everyone's taste.

To this untrained eye the one on ebay looks identical (bar the newer arm) to my April 2002 model (the date is part of the serial no. written on the bottom of the motor pod). So far as I can tell, since then they gave it a thicker platter and have a slightly different arm mounting arrangement to accomodate the greater thickness of the platter.

And its still only £750 ... Folks are missing a trick here or expect a flurry of last minute activity.

Well, there was no flurry of activity.
Only myself and one other bidder. He won at £910.
I'd left it there with a minute to go, and expected a last second snipe to bump the price up, but it didn't happen.

    Wasn't me!

Neville - Just a thought - if you come across anything similar nearer me (S.Devon, so not much is actually near) - that you don't fancy pursuing - I'd appreciate a heads up. That said, I have got a couple of days in London later this week - hmmm - but I am supposed to be looking at prams and stuff - but that won't take two days - and John Lewis is quite handy for that nice little TT shop.....

    Thanks
