Friday night, I was out with friends - we went to several pubs and bars and I had an excellent time - until about 3:30 in the morning. I was walking home (I called for a taxi, but they never showed up) and by this stage, was literally 5 minutes from my house. Was crossing a road, when suddenly, I was assulted. The bastard came up from behind me and before I had a chance to see who he was, he punched me in the face. I fell onto the road - luckily on my hands and knees, so my face wasn't damaged too much. He then ran off.

Two very helpful guys waited with me, until the ambulance came to check me over. I didn't end up in hospital, as all that was hurting was my upper lip. Luckily, my wallet, keys and mobile phone weren't taken. I think the person who attacked me ran off with my 2 month old Seiko watch (worth about £100 or so). It was more the fact I bought on holiday, when in Dubai about 2 months ago - i.e. the sentimental value.

Got 5 hours sleep and was awake just after 9AM today. Went down to the police station and handed in a form given to me by the ambulance crew. I was also asked if I wished to make a statement, which I did. Luckily, somebody witnessed the event and had already reported it to the police, so there might be hope of something positive happening.

I'm still pretty shaken up, and as a fairly big guy, I've never had any problems with fights, nor do people start on me. I don't get involved with fights - there is no point. It's worrying that someone who works hard all week and just wants to have a bit of well deserved fun on a Friday night with some friends, has to worry about being attacked in the street!

A scary world we live in now!

Sorry to hear that happened to you nsherin. It's a good thing it was nothing very serious. The best defense you can have for yourself everytime is preparedness and offensive mode especially in situations like yours. Very late night walks at uncertain places. I do that always here in Saudi, me being a foreigner here. Though this is a more peaceful place compared someplace else, one can never be sure what to expect.

Just an advice, maybe next time you have to go out and go home very late, carry something with you for protection. Or you can also learn some martial arts as a minimum protection.

    Take care.

    regards

Thanks mate for the advice. It shows how out of hand things have got here in the UK.

Places like Saudi and Singapore, which have very strict forms of punishment, seem to work, although they are repressed to some extent.

Personally, if the bloke gets 50 hours community service or some other piss ant punishment, such as that, it's hardly going to sink in much and ensure that he doesn't do it again. I reckon we should bring in corporal punishment - a few strokes dozen strokes of a hard, metal cane (with some form of electrocution) :JOEL: would not do him any harm whatsoever.

To be fair, I'm possibly being a little harsh, but bottom line is, we need to dole out punishments that will make these thugs think twice about doing them again!
