Three pieces of very beautiful, fine black granite. 30mm thick, one piece 495x330, other two 460x370 (mm of course).

    £15

These are to be the shelves of my forthcoming semi-DIY rack. Each one weighs around 15kg...

I could quite possibly source more.

The granite itself was actually free, as it was offcuts that were lying about. The £15 is just to have a 740x460 piece cut in half.

Problem obviously is that if you're not local then delivery on something that heavy and somewhat fragile (ie it can be broken, so the couriers will damn well try) is going to be pretty expensive...

Top is polished. The sides are just raw from cutting (otherwise you'd be starting to look at serious money). I'll get some pics...

With offcuts it's more what you get. I was lucky in that with this one cut I'm having them do (like I said, that's what the £15 is for) I have three hifi-sized pieces, two of similar size and one wider but less deep. My rack design will allow both sizes to be used perfectly well.

Hmmm! Rings a bell. David Bowie? Now what was the track. Bewlay Brothers perhaps?

Penence - nice sign off there dude - good old Bewley Brothers...

Isn't it "I was stoned and he was whacked" though, or is that just wishful thinking on my addled brain's part? Might be me - after all I misheard REM's "Crush with eyeliner" lyrics as "she's a scented ladel" not "she's a sad tomato" - crazy :)

We're talking 1995 and days of Sony midi system dude - when I upgraded I already knew what he sang as I'd checked the lyrics on the net :)

Woah - "stone and wax" - man, I really must stop reading druggie references into lyrics :)

Very nice price. In switzerland you need to put nearly a zero at the end. I went a few weeks ago to a place near me for two pieces I would like to "stick" on my wooden wall just behind my subwoofer. The two pieces are approx. 1100 x 700 mm and would cost about 180£. To be fair they are polished and also cut (not rectangular) but nevertheless.

Another point I would like to raise:
Talking to several experts in the resonances and vibration field most of them say that one of the best (and cheap) material to put as a shelf would be a 20 mm ply wood (I think you call it like that). Between the wood and the rack put some small rubber pieces which usualy are glued under units to avoid that the unit scratches a table (sorry I don't know the right word in english).
Granite isn't recommendable because it seems to transmit very easily the vibrations. The positive point of the granite is the weight to stabilize the rack.

When my rack is complete it will probably weigh around 80kg with three shelves, and another 15kg when I add the fourth shelf. The granite will be sitting on sorbothane feet directly on the metal of the rack, which will be solid steel crossmembers, with sand-filled tubular uprights.

The technical issue that I've not yet resolved is what to put at the bottom of the legs as, with the weight involved, spikes might be a bad idea as far as the floor is concerned...

    Isaac,
the granite will look very nice on the rack and the sound will be better than having a glass shelf but it seems not to be the ideal solution.

There appear to be mixed feelings about granite. There is a company (HNE) in Retford, Notts, that makes racks and speakers out of granite which get fantastic reviews. When I mentioned in passing that I was interested in this to Les at Walrus, he almost fell over and said - "why? granite rings deradfully!" The point that HNE makes is that some granites do ring, while others (clearly those they use) are about as acoustically inert as you can get.

Isn't granite considered to be very good due to it's very random structure. I thought it was considered one of the best materials to use.
