well i just picked up my new car...as a student i wanted to save some money so i sold up my 2.0 16v vectra and bought a 1994 1.8i Vauxhall Cavalier

It has 5 months TAX... MOT until October, all new brakes drives just lovely (ABS, Airbags, PAS, Central locking etc)

    cost?

    £300

it always amazes me just how much your money can buy if your willing to shop around.

i now save money on fuel, repairs, insurance etc etc

A 2.0 litre Vectra would cost me about £7k to insure :( Even my dads 90bhp Zetec escort is £1500 third party :(

You're in good company; I recently changed my escort van for a Transit Connect.....my current broker first quoted £600 for full NCB, driver early 40s + my Dad/8000 miles max per year./off road park etc

We made it clear we weren't happy......it miraculously came down to £500 (why didn't she quote that initially?????)

Commercial vehicle ins is especiallly notorious ...but i've got to have another shop around before renewall.

I only pay about £250 per year for mine on a Nissan pickup parked on the road etc, including the monthly payments premium Through a company called Panacea I think (?), or something like that.....

I will show the pics tomorrow but I have just bought a Fiesta 1.1 classic for £400.

There is a bit of rust under the fuel filler which I am fixing on Firday, mechanically it seems sounds, starts first time in cold, gearbox is perfect, clutch and breaks are fine :)

I drove 3 miles in it and I didn't really feel any different to my instructors 55 reg car, I actually prefered my car as the brakes were weaker. I hate too powerful brakes.

    Insurance is £650 a year :D £400 cheaper than the Punto :D

I know what you mean about the breaks....my dads subaru are very sensitive....i go through the windscreen when i first use them after mine. Takes some adjusting to.

Does this one have a 5 speeder AT?

    Sounds good...should serve you well.

Thanks for the ins info LT.

It started first time in the cold but there was quite a bit of water vapour :( I am going to give it a damn good service tomorrow and hopefully this will solve some problems.

If after a few months it proofs reliable I can get things like the tappets sorted.

You might want to check the breaks as well, they sound spongy.

I went with the post office for insurance this year, fully comp on a 1.9 diesel £180

I've done an emergency stop in it and its ok, I won't be exceeding 40mph in this car.

My mate reckons the water vapour may be caused by incorrect coolant so I should get that seen to.

Don't worry about the vapour in this cold weather unless it doesn't clearup and go away once the engine is hot. By which I mean hot - not just 3miles idling in traffic.

Just keep an eye on the rad water level, and only worry if it drops quickly/uses a lot.

I wouldn't have said a bit of water vapour is at all unusual.....certainly not form cold......I would be highly surprised if there WASN'T any.

(assuming your talking about the exhaust?!)

All due respect to your mate..."incorrect coolant"?

    .....first I've heared about it...

    Meant incorrect coolant level :)

I started it this morning and there was much less vapour so it probably was just that. Its still more smokey than a brand new car but its certainly nothing that would warrant attention.

I know the engine will be a bit worn at 101k.

....the LEVEL won't affect anything surely?

(So long as there is enough in the rad of course.)

The rust is on the other side, its coming from the inside too so I need to scrape it off and apply some body filler, it doesn't have to be a complete cure, but just enough to stop the rot for a year or two before it eats away the car.
