I don't know what is on the market these days but we always use to use waxoil, I htink its still around. AS you proably know, you apply it to under-cars areas where rust might become a problem.....it soaks into the dust layer (which you always get) an forms an underseal affect.

It could be worth squirting a bit under that wheel arch if theres some rust .....

It seemed to work quite well when my sister/brother and myself first started out.

Is the oil filter easy to get to?

    My old escorts wasn't especially....

No the oil filter is a horrible place, right between the back of the engine block and the bulk head (is that the right word). Its a job for a garage basically.

I cna recommend you try National Tyre for that. They'll do you an oil and filter change for less than the bits will cost you, with branded parts & oil, too. It's cheap insurance.

Yes, so long as the drain the stuff out properly, rather than sucking it out which leaves the sludgy dregs behind?!

Also, I've had loads of problems with mechanics just chucking 5l of oil in, whether or no. I had to specifically ask one garage to fill just up to the line. He made out I was being totally unreasonable but filling over the line causes (so i'm told ) massive strain on the internals. (moan over!)

Its a MK3.5 which has the same wing mirrors as the MK4 :) They are from the Ford Escort, my mates got an N reg Fiesta which have got exactly the same mirrors :)

Even the seat trim is from the Ford Escort (on both our cars).

This is also a MK3.5 has the same mirrors as mine

I totally agree though, a good service by reputable people would be a very good move for AT, I was thinking the same myself.

It is very tappety but its a Fiesta, that is normal, I am just not sure I am ready to told my a garage my engine only has 500 miles left in yet :p: Although I am sure there would have been major warning signs of this now.

If I take in for service I may also ask for the chain to be checked, a new chain equals a new engine though :(

The garage have told you it has only 500 miles left? Why?

Sorry, is this ohv or ohc? 1.1 Kent again? (or evolution of)

It clealy uses a timing chain whatever, in that case, unfortunately, if the chain is old, its probably a no brainer!

    Unlucky!!

    Should be SO dear, though!!

Nobody has told me anything about the car :)

Apparently the chains can and do last at least 130-140k. As I have no history (it dosn't exist but I don't know who has it) I don't know if the chain has ever been replaced.

To be honest I just need this car to last till June, as long as it dosn't cut out and the gearbox is mint (which it is) £400 is no major loss (two weeks wages).

I've booked it for a full service, which includes checking the car over for safety, This will cost me £90. The mechanic as not seen the car yet but reckons the rattle is just caused by a lack of oil change. I am not sure as its getting quite bad when cold, somebody has suggested it could be big end failure, although there is no knocking sounds.

It seems to becoming from underneath the engine but increases the more I rev which suggests to me something with the camshaft :(

The rattle soon goes down after about 5 mins idling but its briefly noticeable.

I am not too concerned though as I am only doing 10 miles a week in the car at the moment.
