Just purchased trichord powerblock with 2 switched sockets
Have taken to switching everything on and off at socket as easier(one switch rather than 6!) but is this harmful?
I have digital stuff on one(3way block)and the rest of the kit on the other(6 way bloc), only turning on the digital stuff when needed(rarely)
Don't really like leaving everything on all the time

Not nessesarily harmful but some gear may have a soft shut down/start up, the switch on the block will produce a sudden current in rush. I would just do the six switches as the things were meant to be operated.

It's usually not a good idea to switch the amp and source on at the same time. Source first, then on up the chain. Naim gear is partcularly sensitive to non hierarchical switching.

IMHO sound is much better when kit is warm. I leave everything on (except the power-amp) all the time. If you have a poweramp that idles low, leave that on also.

Things do sound better when left on (although the margins are tiny), and i used to all the time. However in an effort to be more environmentally friendly i turn gear off now mostly.

I agree with hifikrazy, in my system the differences are small, and the equipment reaches full operating temperature within 20 mins

    This is becoming a cliché.

Naim gear is particularly sensitive to [insert here].

    Mains quality
    Fuses
    Equipment supports
    Warm up time
    Non-hierarchical switching
The chirping from next doors' budgie

It's a bloody wonder anybody uses Naim in fact.

Naim gear IS sensitive to electrical switching order - if I turn my CD5 or Flatcap on AFTER my amp, it makes one hell of a pop through the speakers.

I didn't say it wasn't dom. I wouldn't know as I don't own Naim kit. However from what I read Naim kit is “particularly sensitive†to all manner of things. I'll wait for atmospheric conditions and the proximity of ginger haired persons. :p

Naim gear isn't half as fussy as the customers like to make out on the Naim Forum. I think it's a "hearing one-upmanship" thing: i.e. my hearing is so acute that I can discern tiny little differences due to warm-up/burn-in, etc.

An ex-friend of mine secretly switched a pal's Naim system off whilst he was out of the room for a few minutes, then switched it all back on just before he came back in. The guy was one of those people you see posting on the Naim Forum saying things like "my Prefix takes a fortnight to warm up if it's powered-down, even if only for a few moments". Anyway, the system owner with the fantastic hearing & terribly sensitive electronics didn't notice anything at all, needless to say. If he'd known that it had been switched off, he'd have been having kittens about how bad it sounded.

That is precisely why when Naim changed their server last year I did not bother to rejoin their forum.

Navel contemplation of the lowest order.
