As most will know I am self employed and my jobs don't usualy start to around 11am, I usualy get up around 10 to 10:30am and stop work around 9pm the night before.

However my late nights are getting later and later, and gradually my mornings are getting later too at this rate in the winter I will see seeing five hours of daylight!

So how can I start getting up early when I have no reason at all to get up? When I was at university I had to be up at 7:00am as it was a good hour away, when I worked at DSGi I had to get up early, but now I have nothing and over the year my days have been getting shorter.

Atm it seems like each week is a day and I need disapline. Any ideas?

hehe I would love to :) I have a driving test soon so hopefully that will bring new opportunities, I guess atm I have enough money to live and pay the bills so I have no more motivation to work hard, I mean if I had any money it would probably only end up in the bank of Epos or Linn :D.

Get married and have kids. That'll fix everything.

Up at 6am, working by 8am once the kids are off, and sleeping by midnight (after making lunches, doing homework, laundry, etc...)

I do squeeze in 45 mins at the gym 5 days a week and yes, I am self-employed.

My only rest is on the Sabbath when we turn stuff off and can sleep until 7am.

Want to wake up at the same time every morning?

Try an alarm clock - old fashioned, but works every time :)

Oh yeah forgot the small print: "requires will power"

But Tenson makes a good point - why do it if you don't need to.

I saw somewhere a theory that we are all either "owls" or "larks" i.e. prefer to stay up late and then have a lie in (owl) or early to bed early to rise types ( larks).

I my self am an owl, forced by neccessity to the lifestyle of a lark

I have no reason to get up

You and you alone make your life of any value.

Do you not read, walk, cycle, swim, listen to music, play an instrument, play a sport, write, talk to friends, talk to family?

If the answers are all no there's always Jeremy Kyle to watch!

I had a similar issue a while back until I rigged my own alarm clock based on a rape alarm - mains timer switch into AC/DC converter soldered onto battery terminals of a rape alarm. Trust me, when that bugger goes off on the other side of the room, you're getting out of bed PDQ.

I'm with Bob McC on this one. What do you mean you have no reason to get up? Jog a few miles every day before work, you'll feel better now and will live longer and in better health.
When I don't feel like getting up (it happens to all of us), all I have to do is remember Pink Floyd's line:
"And then one day you find ten years have got behind you, no one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun."

See, I feel like I missed something somewhere anyway. I get up, go to work, come home, go to bed, get up, go to work, etc...

I can't help feeling I should have done more with my life

Isaac you have a good job and will be able to enjoy it when you retire although I think you're my age (26?) that is a hell of a long time to go :(.

I was thinking of starting a new course such the government have changed the rules and it will cost me £1000's do ao anything at professional level.

I have a driving test booked soon so when I finally pass that it will give me a new purpose to get up, as I can't drive tired on a few hours sleep.

I am actually falling asleep now and forcing myself to stay awake and not nap, that means I should go to sleep early and get up at 9 like I used to.

In which case surely you are a busy man?

    Why not?

I think I must have misundertood your post.....

If your day starts a little later than most....you work hard for say 12 hours, then finish....so what?

If you are finding your finish time gradually creeping into the red.....(part of the problem I had when I was gardening)......you just have to be wary of buring the candle etc

We all have to do that.

I'm off on sundays, with my other day off (when I actually take it off), rotating.

I tend to get to sleep about 2am. Often later.
I tend to get up about 6am. Often earlier.

If you feel you're wasting this time by sleeping, then do something about it! Perhaps it's more than just you're wasting this time, and mayeb it's more the frustration of knowing you're wasting it, and not being able to fill it even though you know you're wasting it.... if you know what I mean?
    Been there, done that!

Self motivation. Force yourself to get up. Every single morning I still struggle to get out of bed, but as soon as I'm up, I'm fine.

If however it's just that you think you should maybe possibly kinda well.... get up a wee bit early, then bleh! Make the most of it!

I'm sure circumstances will change at some point and you'll long for them long sleeps!

Well tonight I was all set for an early night, almost feel asleep before but forced myself to stay awake, walked down to Morrison's to get some food and I feel fine now.

The problem is I have to have a customers computer ready for 11:00am and having the usual problem of trying to find the drivers etc on far eastern motherboard sites :D, I won't sleep until its finished, so I guess 1:00am should be my target now.

get up at 7am. That gives you 4 hours to source drivers.

I'm reminded more often of John Lennon's line about life being what happens while you're busy making other plans.

I have a driving test booked soon and I think I am not sleeping because of that, because I know I will just lie in bed worrying about it, if I just keep myself busy to say 3:00am I will just nodd off.
