MBL do make some omni speakers. Very 'nice' but not 'right', I couldn't live with them.

I haven't heard it in a familiar system, so I really can't comment on the sound of the turntable. The Raven AC is reviewed by Michael Fremer in the December edition of Stereophile, if you're interested. He likes it a lot.

Easy - theres always something better so comparisons are worthwhile.

If you like rock or female vocal there is no contest - go for the brinkmann. I would also take the avid and simon yorke above the sme. The sme is unfashionable because there are some things it doesnt do well... IMHO.

Pick dynavector or brinkmann emt over transfiguration.

You can compare all of these at walrus.

Personally I don't like the sound of the EMT Brinkman. I find it weak and thin sounding. A good bet is the Benz LP, or for an easier time the best one is the SPJ version of the Benz Ebony.

Like all emts the brinkmann version requires capacitive loading - perhaps a total of 600 pF including cables or it will sound very peaky with a recessed mid and weak character. It also requires very exactly 600 ohm loading. +/- 50 ohms or 50 pF can be heard clearly.

I heard the cartridge at Les and Petes. I wasn't convinced.

But I apreciate its all subjective, and I sure my tastes don't suit everyone especially my music as my wife keeps telling me. I do like the Brinkman turntable though and I like the Brinkman arm.

Any one ever heard the SPJ Laluce? or the SPJ alba?

They dont load the cartridge capacitively so there is no reason you should have been convinced - in their setup it sounds weak and bright.

Alba? Isn't that something you buy from Asda's electrical section?

Nick is right. The EMT based Roksan Shiraz uses small smd caps on the body to load the cartridge to good effect. When I heard Nick's cartridge it sounded clean, brightly lit and agile but a bit too fierce up top - something correct loading should put right.

When rob heard the system it wasnt correctly loaded - it now sounds a lot better. The room is still rather "live" though - a combination of wooden floor and concrete walls and ceiling - it does add a bit of glare.

Walrus usually use a groove with default settings of 100 ohm loading and 110 pf loading - which is way out as I keep telling them ;). IMHO the weak point is the brinkmann arm - swapping in an airtangent was a revelation - though the bass lost out in comparison to the 10.5.

I heard the system from Les using the Air tangent. But I did not notice the phonostage. It clould have been the Klimo. Walrus had the same set up (brinkaman EMT) at the 2004 Heathrow show with The SPJ Alba and the Benz SPJ cartridge.
