It's indeed true that the manufacturers add chemicals to tobacco to make sure they continue burning (nitrates usually), but all tobaccos contain nicotine (the Linnean classification of the plant is Nicotiana tabacum) and the burning produces tars. These are just as present in rollups as in manufactured cigarettes:

I don't think there can be an answer as it depends on many factors. Let's just say that there is no doubt that both situations result in the production of vast amounts of crud which are best avoided.

Yeah but the scenery is amazing - especially from Sargans through to Chur, the ride is just like gliding, and it's so relaxing that you just don't need to smoke.

This is nothing. Get off at Chur and get on to the St. Moritz-bound train of the RhB (Rhaetian Railway) - and prepare to be totally blown away:

I'll most certainly check that out next time on on my way to or back from the "in laws" in Tamins :)

The photo is already enough to give me vertigo :) Hopefully after August I'll have all the time in the world to go exploring in der Schweiz. Although I may well have a quick visit to Zurich beforehand. :)

Let me know when you're passing through. I only work in Zürich, but if it suits our respective schedules, we could meet up.

I will indeed. I'll look forward to it. Funny though, I was there only 3 weeks ago. If I'd have thought about it I'd have dropped you a PM. Nevermind there's always next time :)

That viaduct's crazy! Trains rule - I'll have to check out Switzerland one of these days :)

BTW - I've now not smoked a cig for 6 weeks and 1 day - that's the longest I've given up since 1995. Woo hoo!

The whole Albula Line's crazy - they basically decided where they needed to put the Albula Tunnel (to get to St. Moritz), and then they sat down to work out how on earth they were going to get the train up there and down again. The result is a fabulous multiple-spiral tunnel line which leaves you thoroughly confused as to where you're going. Small wonder the RhB is a railfan's paradise.
