With the recent threads about certain bands being morbid (i hope i've spelt this correctly) how about the Smiths greatest hits. Still a good cd though. Anyone else who would like to add to the list. I'm sure if you guys look back there are a lot of bands morbid, just we have forgoten about them.

how about nick cave and the bad seeds and i've always found the cure to be curiously morbid too. sisters of mercy, spear of destiny, fields of the nephilem, the mission, the damned, etc. all have a morbid edge too. more conteporarily, nine inch nails, young gods, rob zombie, marylin manson are all pretty morbid too.

    cheers

    Morbid or depressing?

Quite a lot of my collection falls into one or the other, how about Script For A Jesters Tear by Marillion, Chasm by The Beyond, any thrash metal band (Slayer do it really well), or more or less anything by The Cure or Radiohead.

I suppose the real question is who still releases morbid and depressing stuff?

Okay, just looked at the tracklist for the best of the smiths, depressing lyrics but good songs!
There is a light that never goes out is probably my favourite song of all time.

Crowded House are pretty similar in having really down lyrics, masked by great bouncy tunes.

Yes Phill77, I'd forgotten how good the Smiths were. Even though the lyrics are morbid, they make me laugh. The songs were different at the time, with some very well timed lyrics.

OH pure PURE taste - fekking EXCELLENT tune! "This charming man" is another "bouncy tune/down lyrics" one...

I think my favourite Smiths-related tune has to be Morrissey's "Every day is like Sunday" though - love the imagery of a rundown seaside town - kind of like the video to The Specials' "Ghost town"...

Ohhhh, heaven knows I'm miserable now. What difference does it make when Bigmouth strikes again?

The Smiths are an English disease, really. I'll never understand just why anybody could like them. Ugh! And don't get me started on Morissey ...

Me neither - sorry for confusion - I meant, that track reminds me of the kind of feel of the video to "Ghost town" by the Specials - which was shot in... ...a run down seaside town :) OH - and in the rain too.

As for The Smiths being an "English disease" - well, we like drab tunes as it fits in with our drab weather - though this year, we've had an almost perfect summer, so loads of teenybop crap put out in the charts instead :)

The reasons people like the Smiths are quite simple. They made pop music that fulfilled the holy triumvirate: it engaged the head, the heart and the feet. Morrissey brought the sensibilities of a novelist to the songs, cataloguing life's many obsessions and absurdities, giving a vivid voice to its bitter triumphs and sweet losses. He was also screamingly funny. And Johnny Marr could write a tune, couldn't he?

Of course, they're not everybody's cup of tea and shortbread finger. That would negate their very point. But don't parade lazy statements such as “the Smiths are the English disease†without at least offering something by way of explanation. And what ever you do, don't try the 'miserable' argument. It's about as tired and ill-judged as the 'jazz is tuneless' jibe, and the penalty will be an instant slippering with no supper.

    Vivid? The Smiths?? Morissey???

You must be very heavily sedated to bring up the word "vivid" wrt the Smiths.

But jazz IS tuneless! Godawful squawky crap! IMHO, that is - which is a minority viewpoint on this one!!! Trad-jazz is passable and ragtime is OK, but anything modern-ish is just catwauling... Mind you - it probably doesn't help that I associate a lot of jazz music with porno music (it's those sax lines) and I got force-fed Trout Mask Replica recently, which is just noise...

Kind of blue is about as close as I'll get to Jazz - yep, lowest common denominator...

The Smiths rule though - does that let me off the slipper/supper thing!?

    dom,
i used to think along those lines but try some dave brubeck, cannonball addely, jimmy smith or some of the great jazz singers like nina simone if you think jazz has no tune. modern jazz is a bit more difficult to get into i'll agree but it can be done.
    cheers

I'd not really class Nina as jazz, so maybe I'm listening to the wrong type hey? She's great...

I guess I must mean more "freeform" or "avante garde" jazz; trad jazz is usually a laugh riot especially live :)

I can't play these at work and I'm not downloading that over a dialup (getting a LOT of agro with my housemate's ADSL causing my dialup to crap out - until he sorts out a router there's not a lot I can do about that!) - what style is it?

It was 'weird' jazz. I'm sure you would have hated it!
