Am currently using WinDVD recorder as my software dvd player, and it sounds horrid- all compressed etc. I have Windows Media Player 9, but that doesn't support DVD playback on my OS (2000 Professional). Any other recommendations before I bring my own dvd player back up from Ipswich in November?

PowerDVD is what I use, plenty of sound options in there.

BTW you did check that WinDVD wasnt using Dynamic Range Compression didnt you?

can't see any DRC functions in it but have just changed sound from 'auto' to Direct Sound which sounds a bit better.

Anyway, you could try PowerDVD. I find it the best by some margin, IMHO. The Dolby Headphone modes are pretty good too!
