Squeeze box

i heard about this device which allowed you to link your amplifier or something like that to your computer? making your computer act as a cd player. i don't know much about this device i just heard a little something about it, and for all i know it doesn't exist.
if it does exist, could someone give me more information?
it would also allow me to get rid of that cheap 5.1 setup i have on my pc.

edit : the strange device is a squeeze box

the reason that i wanted to get a squeeze box is for budget reasons, do you have any idea where i could find a cheap yet efficient squeeze box? my amp is just a meer NAD 3020A so to be honest i dont need anything brilliant. (my cd player is even worse, sony CDP-m25, dont think it even exists anymore, cannot read scrached cds very annoying).

just wondering, will any sound my pc makes come out of the speakers? or does the squeezebox litteraly act as a mp3 player?

It just acts as an mp3 player, point it to a directory on the computer with the music in and it will only play what is in that directory.

You'll struggle to find the new SB3 for under £229, but you could try looking for an SB2 on ebay (they are the same hardware inside), I imagine a few will be appearing from people buying the new model.

If you need a PC to act as a music server, I have put details of an easy to use, pre-configured server in the trade adverts, I have also just managed to get some tiny pc's for those after a smaller solution.

£179 but as the SB3 is essentially an SB2 wearing an audiophile coat (i.e. the inners are the basically the same) why not get the SB2 for £129?

I see they also do Qnap TS-101 NAS 500Gb.
Simply un-box and plug the TS-101 in to your network and copy your music files over to the TS-101's music directory. Your Squeezebox can now access all of your music collection straight away without your PC or Macintosh having to be switched on.
Looks tempting.

the pc wouldnt be a music server, it is the one i am currently using now.
if i find a SB1 is it worth buying? or should i really aim for a SB2?

SB1 is good but the SB2 is definitely more musical. Using your PC shouldn't be a problem except when you re-index. At the moment my PC is using between 1-10% CPU usage, nothing more so Slimserver shouldn't intefere with other programs.

If you just want the PC sound to come out of the Hi-Fi you can use a wire. If you want it to be wireless I saw in a little shop in lakeside a transmitter that you plug in to the PC soundcard and it then transmits to a recover at the other end. I think it ran on high frequency radio so it won't be ultra Hi-Fi but considering the rest of your kit (no offence) might not be to bad especially if you are only playing MP3. It was about £15!

As people have said, the squeezebox will only play MP3's or other music files, it wont just send any sound from the computer.
