Actually, Betamax lives on in modified form as Betacam - which is what pretty much all TV programmes made everywhere for the last 20 years have been made with. Sony still has a pretty good grip on this market, and has quite possibly made more money from its format than Victor has from VHS...[/QUOTE]

They should stick to netMD. If they had pushed MD more in the first place it might have stood a chance over CD-R. If they branch out they'll end up with 2 mediocre products rather than one good one. If it uses the same software as the NetMD then that could be a serious problem for them as it's wasily the worst part of the package.

How do they intend to connect to it? If it only does USB and/or firewire then nobody will touch it. However, if it has optical in/out a la iRiver H series then it may tempt the masses who are still using CD or MD for portable use.

I thought this was a strange concept - the propriatary format is almost a non-starter. I also thought they were bringing out an MD format that could hold 1GB of music.

Interestingly, it appears to be possible to store audio at 44.1khz 16bit on Hi-MD. Not that many people are interested in quality in portable music any more. Why is everyone obsessed with compressing their music?!

yet another dismal effort from a company that has completely misunderstood todays market forces. perhaps if they'd offered compatibility with i-pod but their own proprietory format was used in addition to offer more space and lower prices then they might have had a chance. as it stands it looks like it'll be consigned to historys round file. time for sony to fire another 20,000 people - hopefully from the little hitlers that control video game submissions - oh please....
    cheers

It is a mark of how short my memory is that I took GCSE Chemistry less than a month ago!
