    Hi,

Has anyone been watching Soul Deep on BBC2? This is an excellent series on the the story of soul music. There has been 3 programmes so far. They have dealt with the pre soul/RnB/jump blues days, the gosple influences and the rise of motown. Future shows will look at Sourthern soul, Funk and a look at up to date stuff.

It features a lot of quality footage and interviews from a wide range artists. The music has been top notch.

This has been a good way of looking into soul music and how it has fitted in on society and changed culture.

Yes saw the first two, very good, missed the last one though. Things like that just add stuff to the list of stuff to hear though which has its good points and its bad points I reckon

Always seem to be out but from the advers it looks a good programme, that gets to the real heart of the music rather than the comercial pulp that springs to most minds when they hear the word soul. I ought to tape it there must be much music to descover, some of your tunes the other night were totally new to me.

I've enjoyed it too, despite never being too keen on Motown..
I'm looking forward to the funk prog, no doubt with contributions from George, Bootsy and Sly.

    Hi,

Another fine edition on funk. Good to see some of the main players featured. James Brown, Bootsy Collins, George Clinton and Pee Wee Ellis were interviewed. Some nice classic footage shown.

Also there is a cd out that covers some of the music from the series.

The double cd has a lot of excellent stuff on it but it misses out on alot of the acts that feature in the series. Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Sam and Dave, Wilson Picket, Public Enermy etc.

What is needed is a box set of the music from the series and beyond.

Yep, another great episode on saturday. That footage of Stevie in the studio was excellent...i'd love to see the whole reel. What a load of great musicians there were around at that time. And the thing I like about the whole series has been about the element of competition between labels and artists. The closest we've had to that recently has been between Blur and Oasis which is so pale in comparison. I guess the world seems a lot more apathetic compared to the political feeling and music during that period.

And isn't Bootsy just the coolest?

There was another excellent series a few years ago called "Lenny Henry's History of Funk", which had a perfect explanation of "on the one" by Bootsy. It showed me the true way, instead of being a punk/rock bass player!
Rhythm is where it's at, not poncey melodies and acoustic guitar strumming!

    He sure was! Nice shades!

I remember that film. It was a South Bank special in 1992. It had Lenny singing with the likes of Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker and Pee Wee Ellis. It was called 'Lenny Hunts the funk'.

I taped it at the time, not sure what happen to the tape.

You tell them Leonard, you them!

I saw it last night what an education for me, i had missed the last 2 before saturday's. I do seem to like the more dirty music more than the smooth if you know what i mean

Was good. Hats off to the beeb for a great series. They also included sections of performance of No More Drama that appeared on Jools a little while ago. Still stands out as the best performance I've ever seen on that, or any other show. Great stuff.

They're usually repeated on BBC3 or 4, not sure when...
But I felt the last show was the weakest, mainly because there was virtually nothing about the beginnings of rap (no Sugarhill?), or electro (Jonzun Crew?).. In fact there was a 15 or so year gap - Mary J. Blige as the saviour of soul? My arse :D
Not funky and too much low quality wailing...
