This must seem stupid - but I hate computers and don't really care for them. But right now I have a problem.

My mail box (Outlook Explorer something) is flooded by spam. All kinds of things I don't want, but especially Viagra offers (my wife's computer is also receiving them - is there a message here? )

Now I want people that are not part of my adress book to be able to contact me, but I really don't want to have to have to search for the real messages between the spam - I have already erased important messages that way.

Is there a solution? And which is the best one?

    Any ideas?

for starters its its not worth using outlook express which is the one i gues you are using.

Try getting Mozilla thunderbird with this app you can use filters on you email to se a selection of rules that will either delete or put in a differant folder the spam emails.

there is software about that does spam filtering in outlookexpress but there not worth it imho.

I use a free prog called mailwasher, this looks at your server before you download, from there you can see whats in the mails and choose to delete bounce and add to friends/blacklist, the free one works with one email addy (not hotmail) for around 20-40 dollars you can have pro version that works with many, might be worth trying, for the ones that ZG sends me I look and click from mailwasher and don't even bother downloading them.

I'll second Mailwasher as it works very well for me. I now get at least 150 emails every day and probably 140 of them are spam. I don't bother to download them but use Mailwasher's facility to bounce them back to the sender with a select few being referred directly to Spamcop to complain to the respective ISP

    Thank you all.

I'll try both alternatives. Then I'll let you know.

I use BT Yahoo Broadband and find that their spam filters seem to be working quite well these days. Basically when i first log on, my Home page has my Online mailbox so i can see straight away if i have any mail. I have set my filters to screen out certain words and symbols, anything with these key words and symbols get automatically sent to either my trash can or a bulk folder. The Anti virus aspect of screening your e-mail online works quite well too, i have found that the odd one that does appear is pretty easy to spot ( usually has an attachment and from a stranger saying open this now !). By the time i spark up Outlook Express to save the e-mail i actually want on my computer all the crap has been washed out.
I know that it is quite topical these days to dismiss IE and OE but i find that they work OK for me, i have auto windows update programmed and also Norton live update, basically i just log on and go about my business with no problems really. BT Broadband also have a facility whereby if you are not sure about a certain organisation or individual you can use a 'dummy' e-mail address linked to your main account, if this gets spammed then you know your suspicions were right and you can then just trash the dummy address.

The latest version of Outlook which is bundled with Office (and is not Outlook Express) has very effective spam filtering. If you have the latest version of Office, you probably have this application.
I have the filter set to strong and at most one or two a day slip through. It's straightforward (and necessary, especially at first) to mark individual emails as junk or to unjunk them.
If you don't have the latest version of Office (2003), then you are better off changing to another app such Thunderbird and one of the antispam apps.
