Which is preferable, bare cable to the binding post or via additional connectors? Steven
I'm betting that you'll get a lot of different replies to this, depending on priority. Some will say 'bare wire is better, less in the signal path'. True, but you have oxidation to contend with. 'Strip back periodically' they'll contend, but eventually you have no cable left... De-Oxit and pro-gold can be used to remove oxidation and improve contact. Also you need to continually check the quality of the connection - the terminals will loosen over time. Others will say 'banana plugs avoid oxidation and are nice and convenient'. Again true, but then do you solder or crimp. Arguably crimps are better because pressure joints improve with age, solder joints deteriorate. Either way you have more in the signal path. Also all banana plugs are not born equal - contact areas and tightness of fit vary greatly. Still others will advocate spades 'more contact area' they'll cry - but again more in the signal path, and not as convenient as bananas coz you still need to screw them down. And you still need to decide crimp or solder. Hardcore DIYers may even suggest 'if you are happy with your cable long term, then solder direct to your crossover. Supremely inconvenient, but least in the signal path. You could go one further and solder the cable straight to the output of your amp, and for that matter do the same with I/Cs and power cables. So there you go - pays your money, takes your choice!
It's not always easy The choice isn't simple I personnaly prefer banana-connectors, but your amplifier and your loudspeakers must handle them offcourse, (this isn't always true) try this plug: http://www.eichmanncables.com/bayonet_plug/index.html Okay, this is a bit expensive, but what they are say is true, this banana makes a difference Eichmann impress me with their stuff If you want suggestions to good and affordable interconnects, let me know
Re: It's not always easy Well if these are as good as people claim their RCA plugs are then they should be very good!
tom, are you sure you have actually heard these cables (your latest find on the web) No offence tom, but all your posts seem to be pushing some website or other by saying that in your opinion they are the best, but have you used them?
Robbo you may be right:yikes: all these years i ignored adverts and went by peoples recs and my ears what have i done?:banghead:
yes, that's true But these ones I have heard! I am talking over a lot of amplifiers and things etc. and haven't heard all of these, But the Bayonet Plug from Eichmann I have heard! The connectors are sturdy to solder, they don't weaken, if you solder them a tidy bit to long The main thing is that the sound is A LOT faster and seems more precise, a bit easier listening. Important is to clean the contacts of the plugs once a month, they can SLIGHTLY corrode, I use 'kontakt 60' from chemie kontakt Tom
Tom, we all know about cleaning contacts and the eichman theory, How have you managed to listen to them, as far as im aware they havent been re-leased to the market yet
