Tony, you're the one equating demonstrable and explicable microphony in phono cables with everything else. Hence the request.

Told you so ner! But no-one listens because I'm allegedly 'barking'.

WM, I've been around the block a few times when it comes to hifi*, I've heard a hell of a lot of systems, and I know that what I have is very special. Yes, I've 'done' cables and all that. I know the Mana cable I use is better than the Naim one, it's an easy a-b. But the differences between them not those of 'tonality' or 'warmth' or any of that nonsense. The Mana one sounds clearer, that's it. I was given it, but it wouldn't carry a high retail price because it isn't 'esoteric' in any way, just well-designed and made for the purpose. Neither has it been 'toasted', nor any other voodoo blessings bestowed upon.

    Regards,

    * I also know a man who has been around the block many more times, and what he doesn't know about hifi isn't worth knowing.

At the time, I assumed that this was a cable effect, but the more I think about it, the more I think that it may well be because my cable is travelling from phase 8 (TT) to 7 (pre). Mana stands reject feedback.

James, can you clarify something? I think you are saying that Pauls cable (Linn arm lead?) off mana is microphonic. Your Naim Aro cable on Mana is not microphonic. From this you think that is because of the Mana that your completely different cable is not microphonic?

    Wouldn't be JW would it?

Possibly for the reason you give, or maybe because of the pretty severe phase shifts loudness correction introduces when done in the analogue domain, loudness buttons are pretty much out of fashion, except omn low end combos and car radios. Personally, I have always felt the cure was even more unpleasant than the illness it sought to remedy.

Maybe a correction in the digital domain could be more effective.

Had a play tonight, twiddling a few knobs (ooh err :D ). Seriously, I was trying various bass/treble settings and find a setting of about 1 o'clock bass and 2 o'clock treble seems to do the trick.

Now that the new NAD CD player has run in a bit, things are now sounding as I want them and to be honest, I think I'll leave things as they are. I've got a sound I'm happy with on vinyl, CD and MiniDisc, so I'll invest the cash in tunes :)

Sometimes, I think it can be easy to be too critical of the sound rather than just sitting back and enjoying the music :)
