No speaker is perfect, horns are no exception and are particularly difficult to get really right (drivers, horns and implementation).
Bad horns can be really atrocious.
That said, the big Westlakes are the finest loudspeakers I've heard, although I'm not sure I could live with them. Maybe if I had the space and money...

It's just a pity that good horns are thin on the ground in the UK.

i dont have a preference as such... i always used to prefer multi driver floorstanders, preferably proper 3 ways. My old epos es30's were such a design and were excellent, offering near full range from a not completely huge speaker. (down to 25hz or so)

The dynaudio contours were similarly capable but were only actually two ways with both larger drivers doing midband and bass.

But then i heard my current speakers the focal 1007be and they blew me away. Compared to either of the larger speakers that came before, they sounded bigger, richer, had more energy, life and soundstaging was awesome. They are also willing to do this at extremely high volume level with no sign of dynamic compression.

Yes they dont realy extend usefully below about 38hz but rarely is that an issue, as very little music has usefull content that low. I enjoy these more than i ever have any other speaker.

I think its incredibly foolish to buy a speaker based on a pre determined pattern, i will pick a speaker based on its individual merits. If i had kept going the route i was, i would have probably been tempted by the PMC OB1's.... glad i didnt as these focals better them in almost any conceivable way.

Well due to budget constraints, space and neighbours ( are you noticing sound quality is way down the list here !:() I presently use these little fellas !

    Mission M30i.

They are good through the mids though....and what bass they have is at least tight, well it shoud be shouldn't it! Tops not bad, slightly rough, but they image fantastically well.

If I had the money and space and no neighbours i'd love some big JBL's with 12" or 15" bass units etc, perhaps some horns in there somewhere too....dreams......

cooky, they certainly are - they are consistently the best speakers i've ever heard under any situation, outside, in a club, in a living room (although that was the small ones not a dance stack). at usc earlier this year all the stalls had systems blaring out a mishmash of distorted rubbish, much as i despise what they are doing to the rave scene, slammin vinyl had 2 funktion 1's which were audiably far better quality than anything else there even under those testing circumstances.
once i've got my house sorted out, and a bit of money behind me the ipls are gone and i'll have a pair of purple monsters in the corners of my living room...

Yer know what? I think they look pretty amazing too-be a bit of a statement chez mine I must say but the Tannoys have softened her indoors up to accept practically anything so long as it sounds good so you never know heh, heh...

Ummm, to me Funktion 1's always had the same boom and tizz as Turbosound. Big install JBL's sound far nicer IMO.
