The Naim est arrive. It's wonderful at least in my system, It kicks ass like an ass kicking mule, has tons of dynamics, and has grabbed the Kefs by the knackers and is giving them absolute hell. I can't hear any of the treble harshness, or so called in yer faceness, it's just straight good fun. Sounds much more like live music than anything else I've listened to.
Right I'm going to play some more music:D

Party was halted at end of Leningrad Symphony by wife complaining of noise.
Yes they are chrome bumper, both come from 1988, but have both been serviced in the last few years, and boy do they kick ass.
Think I'll try the Libertines next....

There is definitely something about the sound, having listened carefully if doesn't do what every other amp I've owned tries to do, put it goes for that live feeling. It digs out detail like a bugger too. It doesn't have a massive soundstage, but it has made my speakers disappear. Is definitely a top bit of kit if you like that sort of thing. Glad I went for that and not the Audiolab:D

Good stuff. Chrome bumper Naim gear is excellent VFM, of all the Naim gear I've played with I like it the most, damned shame they never made a shoebox CD player with the same casework.

The reason I asked is that the chrome bumper kit does not have the bright, fatiguing sound that the olive kit does (IMO)

    Glad you like it.

    82

I used to have one. It's about their worst, sorry Julian. There's a very good reason why they are, er, cheap s/h.

    james,
i have one now and tried the 72, 102 and 282 before upgrading from my nait5. the 282 sounded crap, almost as if half the music was missing, the 102 was a step up from the nait but the price was to close to the 82 and the 72 lacked detail although it was pretty groovy. the 82 had the groove of the 72 but with much better detail retrieval.
but then i think that music off my hard drive sounds good so what do i know?
happily sitting in cloud cuckoo denial land.
    cheers

Don't worry, maybe yours is better than mine was. All my Naim preamps (62, 82 & 52) were bought s/h, so it's perfectly possible, I guess, that I got a 'duff' 82.

I must have got a very duff one, much preferring a Supercapped 32.5. Some people love a bright, aggressive sound. Those who don't opt for chrome bumper.

You mean, she's actually completely deaf?

By the way, please enlighten a total ignoramus - what is "chrome bumper" Naim?

    Chrome bumper

Old-style casework, black with a silver line around the front edges:

This was replaced with olive casework (horrible khaki, basically), and then the current black look.

The old style with a silver surround and a black case.

Yes Tones your honour, she is nearly completely deaf when it comes to hi-fi. Cloth eared wouldn't begin. When I met her she had a panasonic midi, that had a horrible sub to boost the mid range. She had all the bass controls turned up to 10, and the bass boost on. It was grim:D

Dunno, m'Lud, compared to me, she sounds like the very epitome of audiophilia (just ask Dr. "Feelgoode" James!).:mana:
