CWShredder, Adaware, Windows Defender would be a good start

Also try the free trial of this: http://www.simplysup.com/

That is all I usually use, coupled with virus checking

    Wasn't me! Honest guv'!

I'm sensible with my porn browsing ;)

Pretty sure someone's been looking at something they shouldn't be though.

I'll check out the programs andrew suggested.

    Thanks.

It seems most anti-virus software now incorporates anti-spam/popups etc, maybe you just need a newer version.

Free programs like ad-aware allegedly only manage to pick up about 70% of spyware etc, although this is only something I read on some review website a couple of months ago.
Saying that, despite having a new copy of McAfee coupled with ad-aware and spybot, I still get redirected to bloody Netster from Google searches every so often! :(

Clean out your cache including all offline content - this can help a lot in addition to the above.

Also switch to mozilla which gives better control over auto installs

    Already use firefox.
Already use a firewall, AV and spybot.

Pretty sure this is down to someone else been using the computer and just saying ok to anything that's appeared.

Yes but are you using the NoScript and AdBlock+ extentions? They do help as might this site. You should also try surfing via prophylactic proxies like pimpmyip, proxytor and any of the other million out on the net but first make sure that they work as advertised:D

I've never had any problems before and feel the few programs I use are enough. This is down to someone using the computer and just saying yes yes yes to anything and everything.

I think (for now) I've managed to get rid of everything using the suggested programs.

    Thanks.

I'm not convinced. I found Adaware, Windows Defender, Spybot and McAfee failed to catch a few significant issues.

I thoroughly recommend Spyware Doctor (not free) and AVAST anti-virus.

Yep, the site I found that reviewed all the anti-spyware etc stuff found that ad-aware was the best of the free utilities with 70% removal known problems, but to achieve better results you needed to buy one of the 'not free' ones. Spybot was supposed to be pretty crap.

None of them achieved 100% success though. When I installed McAfee it picked up some things Zonealarm security suite had missed, and McAfee misses some that ad-aware picks up, and I still haven't managed to get rid of whatever is redirecting some of my google search results to Netster!

For the money Spyware Doctor is very good. Not only did it find lots of minor entries nothing else picked up but its active protection has alerted heaps of infringements of all different kinds including strange behaviour of installed, trusted software.

    Use Linux :)

When I must use windows I use AVG, Adaware, Zone Alarm. Just firefox 2.

But then, I don't surf porn sites :)

You gota watch these nasty things, they can implant fake services in your system, which are a bugger to remove, if you find one, you have to boot safe mode and remove the service. check your process list of anything that looks remotely dodgy, you can type all of them into google to see if they are genuine or not.
