It looks like there is a new Squeezebox model out. 802.11g networking, native FLAC support, better onboard DAC, and a few other features. Only $20 more than the old model ($299 vs $279 for wireless). Time to take the plunge, I was holding out for the high speed wi-fi and they finally delivered.

    AARRGGHH!!!!!

My Squeezebox1 was delivered 3 days ago.... damn these people.

Honestly though... will the differences be that noticable? On both the analogue and digital side?

Get rid of the bouncy LEDs and it'll sound better again, I'll order one today and see what we can do with Ok

Got the announcement email this afternoon and my only response was 'bugger!'. Had my SB1 for about a month now and very happy with it when partnered with the NOS DAC. Tempted to order the new one but might hold off a bit 'till there are some good field reports in. Could happily do with one in the bedroom...

Hmm - $299 eh? That's around 20 CDs from 101cd.com (at full rate) and a trim butt from me having to change discs versus turning into a bloater and bunging everything on an HDD (and having the swichmode PSU screwing the entire sound, not to mention the fan noise)...

...the future can stay away just a little bit longer... :) When I can do this for £50 I might look into it.

isn't it also the route into material broadcast over IP, or downloaded from same? no requirement to rip your CDs if you enjoy the exercise.

btw, does this definitely isolate one from 'noise' of PCs, and is there no loss in (digital) transit - as input into top-end dac (eg DaxDecade)?

I haven't looked at the details yet, but my take is: a b network is loads fast enough - IIRC my b network shows less than 5% load when playing 192 or 256 mp3s. I woould only want a g squeezebox if I already had a g network and didn't want to run mixed b and g because of possible performance penalties.

The web page quotes me at least $61 to Norway - any of you guys found a European source with cheaper postage? (I'll probably get my second one anyway ;)

    chris, ditton,
the problems with squeezebox 1's digital out are mainly due to the dodgy clock frequency chosen and the micronas dsp core used. both of these issues are allegedly dealt with by squeezebox 2. i've ordered one already so unless you are itching to get one it might be an idea to wait and see if my decade can lock onto it any better than with the sb1 before splashing the cash.

    cheers

sounds good to me, or at least I hope it will!

[did you say Decade? I think I knew that but your 'my kit' still says Dax2. how do you like the Dacade? Have you the black gates fitted? balanced or not?]

yeah, i upgraded and ditched a load of my naim kit a few weeks ago. i've a very simple system now. no blackgates and it's the single ended version (my amp,a naim nap 250, is single ended only - even though it uses an xlr!). its different from what i had before but i think it's got the legs on my old system (just). i was very impressed with the results we got from a dpa transport so i'm hoping that the addition of a squeezebox 2 and something else possibly can lift it to the next level. then it's back on track with some speaker mods. will it ever end?
    cheers

I've got one on order, I'll let you know how it fares with a Decade.

well you know the answer to the question better than most!

as to Black Gates, its a worthwhile upgrade. I was prompted to that by Gary & Nic, and but for the awful burn-in period (no dont listen to it, I did!), it really does mimic the organic (lessen the digital).

Gary, thanks for the link. I'll look forward to the report. I presume that route is wire-ful.

[btw, there seems to be a DaxDecade gathering on AVTalk/HiFi.]
