For many people, the ease of playing digital music on home computers has been reason enough to abandon their old stereo systems. For true audiophiles, who would never consider that option, there are new ways to stream music files stored on a PC to a home stereo system.
The third-generation Squeezebox from Slim Devices is among the most user-friendly of these digital music players. The book-size device comes in versions that work with 802.11g wireless or hard-wired networks (the wireless version costs $300, the wired $250).
To use the Squeezebox, you download software from slimdevices.com and connect the box to your stereo system with a standard audio cable. It communicates with your PC or Mac through your home network and preserves the fidelity of your digital music files, including the largest-capacity, high-quality types like "ogg" or "lossless" files  thanks to a 24-bit digital-to-analog converter.
The Squeezebox comes with a remote control that lets you scan your computer's digital jukebox for artists, albums and playlists. It also plays Internet radio stations. One downside is that eliminating the need to change the playlist on a stereo deprives party hosts of an excuse to leave the room.
