Can you play songs purchased from itunes music stores using the Squeezebox? Apparently it is not supported but are there any ways around this

i guess the ways would be...
delve into the virus infested warez sites and find something that will strip out apples drm from your downloaded file and allow you to transcode them to mp3.

record them via analog to cd or another pc then rip the cd to mp3 or transcode the wav to mp3.

that's all i can really think of. tbh i prefer to buy the cd and rip it . then i don;t need to worry about whoevers draconian drm or what they might change next week. also it means i have a backup of all my music in a pretty much fool proof format.

google fu..

Errr burn the AAC files to audio CD and re-rip to mp3, tbh I prefer to buy the cd and rip it too :)

Thanks - its what I suspected but just wanted to confirm there was no other workaround other than the "DRM stripper"

It seems silly that Apple cannot license its DRM decrytion code to Slim Devices so that iTunes purchased songs can be played via the Squeezebox. I cannot understand the rationale for this as the Squeezebox seems like the market leader in terms of bridging computers and HiFi.

Yeah but seems like too much hassle. Best to buy the CD.
I'll probably stick to playing via CD for now till the whole DRM saga settles down

Pity that Bleep.com only has independent lables.

DRM seems crazy - you can buy a CD and you have unrestricted access to the tracks but if you download it then it is protected by DRM - not really consistent. I know some labels (Sony) had CD copy protection as well but this seems on the way out as the new CDs I have got don't seem to have this.

sony got massive bad publicity from a 'root kit' it used in one of it's forays into drm for cd's - this knocked massive holes in windows security, not sure if they got sued or what though.

slim and apple are competitors, apple has it';s airport and itv and slim has the squeezebox - one is crippled by drm the other isn;t.

my preferred combination of squeezebox and flac means that everything is totally open source and therefore cannot EVER be bunged up by drm and some accountant telling me when and where i can listen to music. i can transcode flac into whatever portable format i like (currently un-drmed wma 128) and listen to it on whatever device i want to use - phone, archos, creative nano.
i own all the cd's i;ve ripped so i;ve paid my dues.
