Anyone get it yet? Apart from the title track - I'm still trying.

Also, how come Hetfield is cool as fluck and Ulrich is a trosser? Strange combo that's been around for so long.

    Re: Re: St Anger

At the age of 38, I certainly hope not.

I'm just growing in to it.

You know Henry, I haven't got S&M. I gave up after Load and Re-load. The thought of a once decent thrash metal (ne one of the pioneers along with Anthrax, slayer et al) outfit playing with the frisco symphonic thing, stank of a monumental sell-out.

Earlier albums were rythmic, strummed, fast, repetitive loud and fast - up until the black album, which was all the above apart from fast - it was sort of a fast-medium - more of a swing bowler that an out-and-out seamer if you get my drift.

Anyway, St Anger is just angry. It is neither trad thrash, nor is it metal it appears to be no more than a good old rant with a bit of both, but neither of.

I'll give it more of a go. After all I'm off to see them at the Leeds festival (and this will be the 6th time I've seen them live) but I just do not get this one.

they seem to be slipping down the slippery slope, sadly enough. they've found a nifty guitar effect and have overused it horribly on most of the songs. recording and production quality is awful, i meant absolutely dreadful... i listened to some of their old cover tunes from garage inc. the other week and the production on am i evil and other early 'garage days' songs are so much better than st anger it is laughable. bob rock should be strung up by his testes for this.
lyricly what i can make out, yup they're angry alright and there is some cleverness there but it's spoilt by the same old same old guitar riffs and the mangy production.
if you are a metalica completist then yep get it. it's still the boys (with another new bassist - shates of spinal tap's drummers here?) and they still have it, but only just.
    cheers

Ah, wondered how long it would take to get around to this.

St.Anger is first and foremost an album that you just can't listen to in it's entirety BUT that doesn't make it a bad album.

Production wise it's quite strange in that it appears to have been recorded directly in the studio (everybody in the same room) with very little mixing apart from some effects added on top.

I actually quite like it as it removes the OTT production of their previous albums and gives it a specific 'feel'.

Each to their own I suppose  .

I wouldn't blame Bob Rock for this as we are talking about one of the most precious bands on the planet. They knew what they were doing and how it would sound.

Oh, and how good a bass player is Bob

The bass player seems quite nifty.

And Julian, you're quite right, the production is horrible!

I've tried it on the CDP, in the car, the DVD and they all confirm the fact.

As for being precious, totally agree. How can a band that is fundamentally thrash with roots in a bit of punky stuff, and who's following are generally not the business/golfing set lead the charge on piracy, the internet etc.

    Makes me Angry!

S&M - As an album, a piece of music and a concept, quite simply stunning IMHO

As for St Anger, extreme is the only word I can use. I went away from the album after listening to it from beginning to end twice in one day, with a combination of all its songs together turning into noise in my head.

It is unrelenting, as heavy as anything I've ever heard (except possibly Static X), and really not all that enjoyable TBH.

I've listened to it and while it just about grows on me from time to time I can't see myself thinking "yeah, I'm just in the mood for that". I couldn't honestly think of a time I would be in that albums mood.

My mini review for what it's worth,
    Rick

according to an interview they gave to x-ray magazine, the entire album was made in the digital domain. they claim that all the studio time was costantly recorded, then whatever sounded good got bolted together using pro - tools. don't know if this is true but it would certainly go some way to explaining how haphazard and ferocious the whole album is!

Don't know if it's out yet or how far down the pipeline it is but, they've a double DVD on the way. Live show with loadsa of tracks (even a few I recognised) with interviews, nearly 1000 pics, and all the other malarky you'd expect.

Being a narrow-minded metalhead (and proud of it) of course I will say that the real Metallica died after And Justice for all. I've heard a few songs of the st. Anger album and I think I've heard enough. In the beginning of their carreer Metallica were the pioneers of thrash metal bringing a whole new genre to this world. Now they have become followers. St Anger sounds like Nu-metal. Repetitve, jumpy riffs and with crap repetitve lyrics, no solo's. The production is, as said earlier, very bad indeed I guess this was done in order to get an underground feel (of course failing miserably). I've heard demotapes recorded on crap four-track recorders sounding better. So much for the underground feel. This is just a commercial product aimed at teen Limp Bizkit and Korn fans who want to go extremer. These are guys in their mid 40's making music for teens wanting to upset their parents. It's pathetic!

About S&M: If you're going to spend a million on a symphonic orchestra you might as well have them play something that actually adds something to the music. they could have been so much more creative with it. The way they've done it now i'd rather put on the original track.
