Having looked at the various ribbons designs around it does seem to be posible to put together a mid and tweeter line array say (using solens / BG for the mid and raal / TAD for the tweeter) that goes down to about 150 hz, where presumeably crossing over into a sub isnt too problematic. So ... which sub to consider?

    1) MAD array - www.getmad.us - overkill but seems to be the only planar ribbon woofer around available OTS.

    2) Commercial standalone subwoofer - such as velodyne. What else out there is SOTA?

    3) Wilson benesch torus - seems like a nice idea but no idea of its specs - what frequency range does it cover?

    4) Dipole bass line array.

    Any ideas welcome.

Not a real fan of ribbon hybrids myself, but I trust you've looked at the Newform Research homepage for some intersting ideas?

With a MAD array it wouldnt be a hybrid.

Also I think most hybrids cross much higher?

The MAD array only goes down to about 80Hz, so it would still need a sub really.

They quote 50 hz - given it has 8 kw handling a bit of eq might work wonders ;)

They also make custom bass arrays which is more what I was looking at - or supplement it with the Torus

Haven't heard the Torus myself, but someone who has rates it as the best sub ever, much better than Velodyne.

Hmmm, on the website it says 80Hz-20KHz (equalised) with 5Kw for the A8.

Having experience with some very similar drivers to those, I really doubt they go right up to 20KHz very nicely. More like 16KHz and then start to break-up. A bit of EQ could help of course but its not the ideal thing.

As for EQing them down to 20-30Hz I would ask them before making any assumptions, as the excursion is very limited on planar magnetic drivers. It could be possible though.

I would only run them up to 150-200 hz.

    They make custom arrays too.
