Not at all, in fact the French commonly use the phrase "la Rolls de/du ... " to describe something as the cream of the cream. :)

Edited : Mind you they refer to the good old days when Rolls Royces had English-made engines ;)

OK, lack of imagination on my part ...

... just that all my spare money has been going into hifi not bikefi ...

Like my hifi, I bought my galaxy s/h.
Like my ditton 15s, I bought the Lejeune new in the mid-1970s. I think I have become more prudent - brought on by family responsibilities/expenditure I guess.

So, what's your nomination, and how near are you to realising that dream?

oh, I'd never buy a dreambike. I dont think the money they cost is worthwhile - even if I had it to spend.

Well, Id get them both custom made, cut to size, form and function.

The roadbike would be a custom made Merlin Extralight
    Campag Record would be luverly.

    http://www.merlinbikes.com/bikes/2005/extralight.aspx

The mountain bike would be a matching custom made XLM.
XTR groupset with pace forks please.

Road wise, I'd be happy with a Scott CR1:
Or for that matter, a Cannondale 6thirteen team, or Colnago Presidente Ldv...
And for a decent MTB, I'd quite like to give one of these a go:
And as we're going for it, I'd also be well happy to own one of these:

Certainly not a plastic fantastic power ranger crotch rocket..

IMHO, the best-looking bike Colnago made lately was the Anniversary,

    http://www.hi-techbikes.com/cgi/display.cgi?COL_2004_Anniv

unfortunately a limited edition not available anymore.

The Presidente LdV looks great too, but I'm not sure the design would "age" well, fashion-wise I mean.

That would be before WWII, then. After WWII, RR, like many others, used a Buick V8 block.

I'm no expert, Joel, but are you not getting that confused with the Rover V8, which definitely was a Buick V8? I always thought that the Rolls V8 was its own (unlike the automatic transmission, which was a modified GM transmission).

You are correct tones... the 6.75 V8 that was used up until the Silver Seraph (which had the BMW V12) was Rolls' own engine. It was revived in the Bentley Arnage by VW because they did not have a suitable engine and BMW would no longer supply the 4.4 V8 which had been used in that originally.
