Anyone know of any sites or links to something that checks prices of Supermarket stuff? I did a shop in Lidl the other day and did start to wonder whether I am right to shop in there or if I'd be better off in Tesco. I know lidl is cheaper on some items i.e. Mozarella, Feta and Chocolate but I wonder how it works out across the board. I usually do most of my shopping in Lidl…although I'm a recent convert….and then pop into Tesco to get the things I can't get in Lidl but I wonder if the money I'm saving even covers the petrol costs of visiting 2 supermarkets instead of 1. What reckon you?

tesco may well be cheaper than Morrisons or Sainsburys in quite a few lines but the quality of their own brand produce is noticeably worse imo. I also find Lidl vastly overpriced but some of their wines are fairly cheap and their 99p/200g coffee is good vfm

    Free Range Eggs (6) Tesco = 84p
    Lidl = 59p

Even if a trip between Lidl & Tesco costs you a 4 litres of petrol you will cover your costs buying a packet of feta, a blob of Mozzarella & a bar of 74% Chocolate.

I reckon you will save on and get better quality from the following

    Beer
    Chocolate
    Dishwasher products
    Vegetables
    Sliced meats
    Cheese
    Pasta
    actually everything except wine.

The only downside is the limited range and the temptation to buy things you don't need "'cos there cheap"

We lived in Germany for quite a few years and are familiar with Lidl and Aldi from then.

Both have opened stores local over the last few years and as with what seems to be happening with many here, they're often used for certain things while the "main" shop is done at either Asda or Sainsbury's.

actually that is what my family does in Ipswich- do a small shop at Lidl, but buy 90% of the stuff at Sainsburys.

as i said, for the quality of some of their produce, Lidl is imo overpriced. I mean, i got a pack of Nectarines a few months back from there and they'd gone all moudly within 4 days whereas a bunch from Morrisons lasted a couple of weeks and were fine. The variance of Lidls potatoes is also extremely wide. I haven't done enough shopping at Aldi but looking at some of their electrical goods- e.g. a 15" tft pc monitor this week for £140 is expensive considering the large response time and you could buy far better, for cheaper elsewhere.

That's me sorted then... That said, I only venture near Exeter's Lidls in broad daylight - being that close to Riff Raff Road (Rifford Road) at ANY time is bad enough, but after dark, you're more likely to end up in a body bag than with shopping bags...

Seriously though, some of Lidl's beers aren't bad at all, and the Exeter store's range is pretty decent.

I'm one of those who's a firm believer in microwave-from-frozen ready meals; if it takes longer to cook than it does to eat, I'm not interested!

But do you regularly shop for AV or computer products at Aldi? Me I go there for the whisky, chocolate and groceries. If I happen to find mountaineering clothing at a fifth the price it's a bonus.

Lidls, for when you are to chavvy for iceland.

As for Morrisons, the local Safeway here has become noticeably worse since they took over, infact its total crap.

There is only one super market, Waitrose.

No I can't afford to shop their either, but it puts everyone else to shame.
