I have always followed the recognized procedure of Pre amp on first for a few seconds before switching the power amp on. and the power amp off first before the Pre amp when switching off.

Can anyone explain why we should do this, is there a valid technical reason, or is it just one of those Hi Fi myths and the reality is there is just no need to do it.

    Non Techie Andy:)

    Hi Andy,

The procedure guards against switch on/off pops and other noises.

The power amp will amplify any switch on/off noise from the pre amp, so the switching sequence you describe makes good sense.

It used to be standard in the computer world too.
Peripherals on first ,off last .
