Nope, the boss knows that these are on loan for a few days. They belong to Nando, I've borrowed them before he puts them up for sale. Also, these Cheviats aren't really very big (only 12" drivers:D). My D700s, sitting behind the Cheviots at the moment, are about 10cm taller and deeper but narrower. Soundwise, I haven't listened to the Cheviots much but I feel I'd be happy with either of these. That is to say that I like these 30 year olds better than most of the modern speakers I've heard.

Nice. Recent re-cone by the looks of things.

Any problems with boomy bass? I always found mine a bit boom-tastic and had to stuff in extra wadding to calm them down - but they were in alcoves on a suspended floor which may have something to do with it!

I think Nando has had some work done on these. The binding posts are modern, so something of a give away. I'm sure he'll post the details soon.

I've only listened to Indian classical music so far. Will let you know when I play something with real bass.

Nice. You soon get used to the bass and start to long for more.

la toilette put some granite slabs under them which helps. Have you started your new cabs yet?

    Jim.

    Haha, you're right there Dev!

Actually she's pretty tolerant of my hobbies and has yet to get uppity about great big speakers and ancient valve gear that occasionally makes unexpected farty noises, and our kitchen is currently a corrugated iron lean-to with almost no worktop space, so I can't really blame her!

Says the wimp unable to keep the various Tannoys he got for bargain price because SWMBO prefers the look of the Castles.

    Dave, fair enough.

Anyway, on to the Cheviots. These seem to be more room tolerant than my D700s, and image better, possibly because they are front ported so work better near corners(?). With my D700 I find the image slightly shifted to the left of the room, no such issues with the Cheviots. They seem more sensitive too, I noted that the volume knob didn't go clockwise as much. Otherwise it's a familiar sound. They just seem "right". Still unsure of the low bass.

Drivers look nice - get them in some scaled GRF's and they will really sing :)

Do you have spare cabs for a quick comparison? Not with Nando's Cheviots but I should have another pair of 12" drivers to play with in 2-3 weeks time.

the drive units on my chviots from cross over to the driver are hard wired with lat cable, had to remove the plastick caps from the magnet, also made provisions for c/o to add and use super tweeters, furthermore if dev wants more bass remove the bottom cover and play with the crossover tilt settins, the pynths can be removed and spiked, but as they are a wise thing is to put them on marble sabs,
