What are your opinions about the Tannoy Eaton speakers? I want to save up for a pair that is in very good condition.

On other sites I see people saying they like the sound of these speakers.

    Cheers

Best to avoid the ones with foam surrounds if you can, as they also made them with rubber surrounds that won't rot. Not heard any yet, but if all goes well with a prospective purchase I might do very soon, so may be able to give you a definitive answer by the end of the weekend :D. I've had good reports from a friend of mine who's heard some.

Seem to vary in price quite a bit on fleabay, I've seen a couple of excellent pairs go for just over £200, and some others go for twice that.

How would you describe the sound of the Eatons? And what amp were you using at the time?

    Glad to hear that.

I have a Quad 405 myself with a 44 pre, both the units have been modified by the 405man. Great sounding amps!! And the phono stage in the 44 is very good for the money I have to say. It sounds great with my LPs.

Does the Tannoy Eatons speaker terminals accept 4mm Banana sockets?

Also, does the Eatons sound OK with CD?

it depends if they have being modified, they normally have a push open socket for bare wire, as far as cd playback they are great they tame the harshness and make it more analogue,

The 'spring clip' terminals on HPD and earlier Tannoy cabs are a bit crap, frankly. They only accept very thin cables, and don't grip the wire as firmly as you might like. I updated them on my Devons and Cheviots with some nice big chunky efforts :D.

Personally I wouldn't suggest that HPD's or any other vintage Tannoys I've listened to make CD's sound more analogue, but it's fair to say that they are neither overly bright or harsh sounding. If you find a pair in good nick for a fair price then grab 'em, they'll be easy to sell on if you don't like.

My Eaton deal has fallen through sadly, never mind.

i grew up with all tannoys including using them in my sound system, eatons, devons, and still have a pair of cheviots that i will eventually sell, berkleys and buckinhams, those where the days, i might have 12" little reds must check,

Something to consider is that you are currently using TDLs - known for their deep and generous bass. Smaller vintage Tannoys will be a bit of a culture shock as they have little low bass, despite the large bass driver, so be prepared for the unexpected when you first fire them up.

How does the midrange of the Tannoy Eaton sound compare to some TDL speakers?

Will the Eatons be more detailed and faster? Also are the Eatons back wall friendly?

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Just one last question, does the Eatons have a bright sound? So to match my warm sounding Quad 405 amps.

    Yes I know it's a silly question.

I don't think I could describe HPD's as bright but not warm sounding either, and they do have treble controls that allow adjustment of the treble energy and roll-off, so you can adjust to match your equipment and room.

Find some and buy some, I'm confident you won't be disappointed.

Even if he was, he shouldn't lose much money if he sells them them on.

On Ebay? - way too much as with most vintage Tannoys these days unless you get lucky.

I refer the honourable gentleman to post no.2.

Basically I reckon if you pay less than £350 for a good smart pair with rubber surrounds, then you're on reasonably safe ground. I have seen a really good pair go on ebay for about £225 (I was really tempted to bid on them, but they were collection only from South Wales and I couldn't be arsed to drive there), which I reckon was really good value. I have also seen a shabby pair with failing foam surrounds go for considerably more, which seemed a bit mad.
