Hello all - new to the forum but wondered whether anyone here had any experience of Tannoy Yorks - rectangular enclosures.

It's just that I may be about to shell out quite a substantial amount for a pair and wondered if anyone had any advice - I know for instance that they need some extra internal bracing - which the seller who is servicing the drivers amd refurbing the cabs for me, will also do.

    Anyone? :)

Hi, I've owned Rectangular Yorks and must say well made Yorks are the ideal cab for 15 golds-anything above their (180L-ish)internal volume is pretty much a waste of time imo.
Those mods linked to are essential if you are to enjoy them at their best, including the port alteration-the stock tuning makes for a flabby bottom end the retune tightens things up..Rear mounting the driver on a thicker baffle improves the stereo image no end too go for it;-)

Have you any plans for well constructed York cabs? Something to think about for the future perhaps... they are about the largest box I could physically accommodate to be honest.

    Tony.

(liking his 15" Golds a lot)

    Hi Tony,
I'll have a root around though to be honest the Arundel box was a better cab, had 36mm front baffle and figure8 bracing-same 180L and tuned to 32hz.

Many thanks. I prefer the vintage looks of the Yorks I think, though if I went down that route I'd get some built solidly and well braced in probably more than one layer of plywood, i.e. aim for the classic 50s / 60s Tannoy aesthetic but seriously over-engineer them inside. This is all a good way off yet, I doubt I'll do anything much for a while other than try to get my existing cabs up a little higher if I can find something suitable to stand them on, I suspect an extra 6-8" would make a big difference.

    Tony.

The Yorks are certainly a more imposing looking box with the wider baffle. They were designed pre T&S and as I recall the plans required a 1/4" thick layer of felt over the centre shelf brace-this helped tame the slightly overblown character to the bass. Our cabs were MDF+1/4" ply box with a 36mm thick baffle and some extra bracing, they were fab.
If you do go ahead I recommend that you go for the 100mm*x165mm deep port.
For the Golds I d try a couple of breeze blocks for now-they sound fine under mine.
