'Professional quality' for £60 - a bargain for sure!

Well, a few months ago you could've had the NOS DAC for 100£, right? Still a bargain...

not necessarily, you can buy personal cd players, dvd players, sound cards, digital radios and so on and such forth, which all contain a DAC of some description, for less than £60 but it doesn't mean they're any good. Could be any old junk stuck in a box.
But by all means try it, never know

I'd give it a miss unless you have a few components you want to connect to it.

Anyone got comments on the underlying sound quality of the Burr-Brown PCM-1716 DAC chips?

If they have any inherent qualities, then this may be a good chassis for DIY modding

    Pcm1716

Respectable enough to be used in the Arcam Alpha 7SE, MF E624 / X-Ray / A3.

Zerogainers might be interested in this list of CDPs & DAC chips used that I stumbled across recently:

    This tweak would be interesting:

    http://digilander.libero.it/paeng/pcm1716_tweak.htm

Sowter and Stevens and Billington also make transformers that might meet the requirements.

EDIT: There is also a pin for pin compatible device from Wolfson that is slightly improved (apparently). WM1716. Mind you its smd and wouldnt be easy to remove and replace.

Actually SMD is easier to remove/replace, once you've had a little practice :D

Okay then guys, is it worth a punt for £60, or is that £60 better invested elsewhere? ...in another low-cost tweakable DAC?
