About three months ago I got hold of a 2nd hand SL 1210 and put an OL modded RB300 on it. No other mods.

Following on directly from that, I sold my Avid Volvere this week. Thats what I call a cost-effective upgrade!

    Alan,

Nice one. I know plenty of others just like you.

SMEs, Linns, Clearaudios, Mitchells, Regas... Pah! The SL-1210 has 'em licked.

Spread the word and help end audiophool snobbery! :)

And how many LP12s did it take to persuade you they are rubbish?

When I used to DJ I had two 1210's (OK I only had Ortofon Concorde Nightclub carts on them) but the crappy Rega P3 with Exact cart I also had a the time wiped the floor with them. The 1210's had a one-note bass and far from detailed sound. I can't believe a RB300 transforms that deck but I'd like to hear it !

    Hi JCL,

I think the 'DJ' Ortofons probably had a lot to do with it. I've tried these (and also various Stantons), and for hi-fi use they're absolutely dreadful. They're ideal for DJ use, though, as one might expect.

Honestly, with a change of arm (or rewiring & fluid damping of the stock arm), and with a decent mat and cartridge, the 1210 is extremely good. I've heard it 'trounce' a P7 and P5, never mind a P3 :)

You should try to get hold of a copy of HFW from a couple of months back where David Price's modified SL-1200 fitted with an Audio Origami-modified RB300 and Lyra Dorian outperformed an SME 10! It was an extremely informative and interesting article.

I suspect that some UK hi-fi dealers with vested interests in selling Pro-jects and Regas, etc, might have been somewhat 'miffed', though ;)

Fair point. I could never be bothered to put the exact on a 1210. Maybe I should have... I'll look out for that Hi-Fi World. It's probably the current one out here :D
