Question from a "soon to be own boss"... is it all it's cracked up to be then?

p.s. I am fully prepared for the 60+ hour working weeks that inevitably lie ahead, ouch!!!

er, I can only speak from my limited experience. Seems to shake down as follows:

if you can sail into self-employment on the back of a big project/job or at least one good repeating client this helps enormously (or an inheritence)

Expect an average of two to three years of ups and downs, but if you're still in business the chances of staying in business are much better than in years 1 - 3.

So far I've experienced greater stability and income over six years than my previous six employed.

I honestly believe if you can make it to year three then life is much better than being employed.

    What's the business?

Nearly have that one in the bag (several repeating clients that is, not the inheritance).

It's engineering consultancy. Basically working in a seriously underserviced market segment in Ireland/Nth ireland.

I currently work for what is about to become my biggest competitor (been there 4 years). Before that, I worked in same industry in UK and Oz and am trying to cut a deal were I can trade under the "brand name" of my old employer on Oz, see here:

What is it you've been up to the last 6 years??
