got myself a marantz st310 analogue tuner today for a tenner. no remote - all manual operation i'm afraid. got it home, plumbed it in and set the dial to radio 2. stunned by the sound and well and truly chuffed with my purchase. considering that i had dallied with the idea of a cyrus fm 7.5 or x which would have set me back at least £200, i really can't believe my luck.

all i need now is some jumbo oak cones and some powerlead + i/c upgrades and i'll be truly happy

You just take your self down to the local wilkinsons or wilco's as we call it round here.

The large hard wood door knobs at a coupleof quid will do the oak cone thing. A couple of meters of 20amp twin and earth for the power cables.Get some Duraglit and clean up all themains pins. IC's Well that a little more trick you need a Maplins for this get there 35/36awg wire wrap or magnet wire, so ok RCA plugs using the zerocost IC recipe on the DIY forum. You'll have change from £15-00, I'd think. With no of that tedious hanging around waiting for RA to send the stuff.

Not that soon I don't think, thankfully. There aren't any definite plans for an FM switch off yet are there?

Some report I read said that the government are now planning to slowly switch of analogue TV starting in 2007, I am not sure if this includes FM radio.

BBC2 apparantly is going to be one of the first stations to go.

    I wasn't being sarcy, I genuinely think it's a shame really - but that's "progress" for you :)

Take it you've bought on of these then....looks pretty good to me, and Cookiemonster would probably like it to!!

    thats the fella.

i was being sarcy. really i am so pleased with myself for not shelling out a fortune. so often we (I) convince ourselves that the next thing or the more expensive thing is the best.

mind you it is being sent through several thousand pounds worth of amp and speaker.

but you can't polish a turd - so it must be good

I agree! I'm just trying to be optimistic that FM may be around a good few years yet...

I paid £80 for a brand new Sony ST300 tuner, I wish I hadn't as it sounds a bit too soft for my liking. At the time I was young and wanted everything to match hence the reason I could not use my 1970's tuner my uncle gave me.

I don't even have my Sony connected now as I never listen to the radio these days, if I do use the radio I use my freeview box. The freeview box sounds fine on stations that don't use much compression such as Radio2 but on stations where it has heavey compression it sounds awful.

Yeah cant wait till they switch off FM and then I have the choice of 100's of commercial stations all broadcasting in 'stunning' low-bit mono!

    Such a step forward!

I'm not a huge radio fan, but Radio 2 and Classic FM sound pretty darn good using the tuner on my Yam HTR5540RDS tuner.

I was considering a Freeview box, mainly for DAB use, but there's nothing on there that really stands out to warrant buying on, TBH.
