I would like to know what do you mean when you say there is ringing in the music.

What do you hear exactly in the music?

I am interested in knowing if you are all talking about the same thing and if that effects the music in the same way from everybody.

    thanks

Technically, ringing is when the speaker cone keeps moving after the signal has stopped.

Don't you call it also ringing when someone claps the hand in a corner and you hear some 'metallic' sound after the clap? That means 'distortions' created by the room characteristics.

    Nope, not echo. :D
And another point: it seems that also racks can 'ring'! You don't hear it directly from the rack but in the music from the loudspeakers.
    Never had that?

It's sunday! who is going to ring the church bells first?

Please don't be offended Chris, but I found it quite enlightening that you were the first to respond to Titian's question:)

Sorry Mike, I felt I should edit out the accusation. QUOTE]

John, just for the record, some of my best friends are gay and have a great sense of humour (ie they would find the inferrence funny!)

I take it John that you are straight in both the sexual and sense of humour interpretations?

    What a curious thread

I thought Titian's question was plain enough. What is ringing in the music (note: *MUSIC*, nothing to do with bums MO :p )

It's all to do with resonance. If you apply an impulse to an object which is constrained so that it can oscillate, then it will continue to oscillate after the impulse is finished. This applies to a speaker cone as much as it does to the air in a room or the shell of a bell. Speaker designers have sleepless nights trying to dream of ways to control resonance so that a speaker cone follows the music signal and nothing more. This is where damping comes into play. However, too much damping and you throw the baby out with the bathwater. This also applies to rooms as much as to speaker cones.

So Merlin, what was significant about my being first to reply? I am an engineer after all. I know what resonance is and I know what ringing is.

BTW, MO - I think you were thinking of 'rimming' which is quite a different thing ;)

    Thanks Chris,

it seems you are the only one here who:
    - isn't too much influenced by April and Spring-time
    - who might be interested about 'ringing'

I was thinking of writing about my experiences with 'ringing' and resonances this weekend but due to how this thread evolved, I believe nobody would be interested.

    That's it.

    regards

Please everyone, stick to the thread... Ive done some editing to prevent offense, there were some unfair accusations, and a joke that caused offense.

Hopefully everyone thinks Ive been even handed.. nothing about hifi has been removed.
