Seems to be a wonder beast on planet Naim forum, but what is it and is it really worthy of the adulation it receives from those dungeons and dragons types over there? I know its breathed on from a bloke called Les,who hates Mick, who has a mate called Sloppymonster, and they all live near Salisbury, but thats all I know.

Oh and its about 5 or 6 hundred quid for a s/h one thats sent to "Les".

Whats all the fuss about and would it be a step up from my Rotel 1070?

Being from a round planet I think I am only allowed to ask here.

Its strange to me,how did he stumble on one particular Arcam, and how did he stumble on the mods and why dont they work with other Arcams?

I suppose I really need to ask this Les chap himself, just wondered if anyone hear knows about this urban myth

    erm

some bloke called Les is the propretor of Avondale Audio, a long established company doing tweaks and his own kit, also a member here and at PFM

He lives near Chesterfielf, dunno what map you use but that aint close to Salisbury.

I think you may find slopmonster is a well known poster here under another name, also not anywhere near Salisbury.

So that removes all you know ;)

Why not get intouch with a bloke called Les and ask for a demo, i believe he offers SOR -

all I know was actually removed at birth.

This product seems intriging enough to enquire further, and I am near enough to Chesterfield.

I get lost with all these regulars posting all over the place.

    thanks for the link
    :)

    No worries

If all you knew was removed at birth, you were one step ahead of me:)

Give Les a bell, he has always been helpful whenever i have spoken to him, although very busy and not always quick to respond.
I believe he has a listening room for demo aswell, but not sure.

*I may be wrong* but i think les was doing tweaks to the cd3 (the cheapest naim player) when it was pointed out that the aa5 used the same dac, filters, whatever so the tweaks he applied to the naim could be applied to the arcam. i think the naim players mods go deeper with a seperate psu etc whereas the aaa5 is just the dac / filter / internal mods.
    cheers

Personally,I found it an odd player to chose,I always like the standard Alpha 5+,but wouldn't have thought it was a player that would appeal to thoes of a flatter earth disposistion,I found it mayored on a big soundstage and depth more than the PR@T qualities.Still I really liked that player.

Oh no, they are far to busy arguing over there to answer questions.

Most of them aren't prepared to think out of the box and will only ever consider the usual accepted 1980s flat earth brands which tends to limit things somewhat. If you dont use the accepted brands, you have zero credibility and no-one takes any notice of what you say (at least IME). Its quite a fun forum to browse though.

    Cheers.

Actually Joel, I think you do Zerogain a bit of a disservice there.

Take a look at the FE places and genuinely the lack of openness to alternatives is quite scary. I think here you will find more of an entertaining mix, even if most stop short of audio extremes.

    joel,
i'd say that zg is one of the more progressive forums about and probably better than most at overcomming the inertia of the past. that said, pink fish was specificly set up to cater for people who like their music a particular way which is fine if you agree with that but can look a little insular if you don't. horses for courses really.
    cheers

I think that there are people on here (such as yourself) who are open to different ideas, but there are people on PFM who are, too. There is as much a "core" brand thing going here as over there: so most of the hifi discussions here are as uninteresting to me as, say, Naim forum hifi discussions (and most of the ones on PFM, it has to be said). But that's probably a result of my geographical location and the kind of kit that's available to me.
The masterplan is, of course, to turn PFM into a music discussion forum and hangout for fundamentalist believers in the Church of St John Coltrane :)
NP Youssou N'Dour's new album Egypt - you might actually like this... It is very very good, in fact it is touched with subtle genius.

I take your point, its just that I feel a little excluded over there as I am not in the 'club' so to speak. Although it has to be said that over here we do have far more diversity and are more open minded. Take for example the move to hard drive audio which a few people have been experimenting with recently.

FWIW, I'd love to be able to try some really big JBL monitors that you often recommend, but at the prices they go for over here - forget it.
