now available as a box set - every episode ever made. plus a bunch of extras (i've not yet seen).
the likes of 5 go mad in dorset, 5 go mad on mescaline, the yob, mr jolly lives next door, the red nose of courage, eddie monsoon a life?, the bad news tour, supergrass, the bullshitters, les dogs, and so many other fantastic episodes that shaped the comic landscape in the 80's and 90's (to some extent). launching some fantastic comic talent.
if you are a fan of alternative comedy at it's ecclectic best then you must get this.
    cheers

"Mr Jolly Lives Next Door" is my favourite film under 60 minutes ever made.

I'm glad its out on DVD at last but a pity not available on its own. I would like to have seen extra features with things like an interview with Nicholas Parsons recalling his experience, or a commentary.

Is there anyone else out there into Jolly?

I remember watching the last series of stuff they made in thr early 90's. Seemed to be Peter Richardson trying to do everything himself, it was pretty poor. I enjoyed The Yob and the Bullsh*tters though. Most of it was just mildly amusing.

Have to say though I only ever saw about 5 minutes of Mr Jolly and as I'm a big fan of P Cook, I'll reserve judgement.

Oh yes, just remembered, the last series did have an episode which brought together Jason King, The Professionals, the Sweeney and Spender. That was pretty good.

    Oh happy memories!

My favourites included: Mr Jolly Lives Next Door, The Yob, Bad News Tour and the often forgotten South Atlantic Raiders Part 1!

Very good. I think that's from a whole site of wav sound clips from the film. Am I right? You know you can download the entire script too, but from where I forget.

Jolly really is THE stand out for some people, not necessarily huge Comic Strip fans generally, but for its own cult following. I'd like to see Jolly out on its own with interviews and location features .

Speaking of locations, I have photos of the warehouse building they used for Dreamytime Escorts, Jolly's fluffy toys business and Heimey Henderson's off licence.
I returned years later to find that it had been converted to flats. I was taking photos of the building just as an Aussie guy was getting out of his car, home from his work in the City. I had to explain that there had been several murders in his block and he could watch them on a video ! He actually was into Mayal and Edmundson but was completely unaware of the Jolly film. He said he'd buy it.

There's a pub round the corner that looked like pne of the pubs in Mr. Yakimoto's tour. The production company denied it but it looked familiar. I asked inside but there was noone there from when it was made.

    Obscessed? Me ? Never.

    Escorts Bestcorts !!

    darren,
yup - travellers cheques is on there. every episode is, as far as i can tell. the extras aren;t bad either - a lot of the cast going over quite afew of the episodes with stories about the production and a 2 part channel 4 special on the whole comic strip thing from it's beginnings in the raymond revue bar.
    well worth the money imho...
    cheers

i would actually say it's my favourite comedy film of all time. it just is the best thing they ever did (IMO). I loved the series Filthy Rich and Catflap too but not many folks I know ever caught it.

The Japanese dude "escorted" on a tour of London pubs in a mini van. Exploding tonic water. "Taking out" Nicholas Parsons.

    "It's Nicholas BLOODY Parsons"

it's the way they get in the van, start it and then just pass out with the revs on full that kills me every time. that and the main gangster character weeping over the dents in his car....

Absolutely superb - pissed to unconsciousness - full revs for the entire time - then eyes open and off they go.

The levels of inebriation are beautifully depicted. Some of Rik and Ade's best work - when they go back to Mr Parson's home. "Let's play a game". Their office, their marketing strategy, the whole "escorting" business idea. The superb Citroen DS. The little coffin for burying the finger. Just the simple fact Peter Cook plays Mr Jolly. The music, Tom Jones played loud whilst Mr Jolly chops up his victims "Does anyone knoowww you're here?"

"Never ever bloody anything ever! I've lived my life by that rule"

I tried to follow his advice.

Rik: "You forgot to put in the telephone number"

Ade: "But we know the telephone number"

Funniest bit in Mr Jolly to me is when they hear the lorry pull up. Rik just opens up the sash window, claps his hands and Ade dives through. You then see him being lowered in a huge metal bucket via a pulley to steal alcohol from the beer lorry. No words needed - pure comedy genuis.

Bought the box set and have watched a couple - Dirty Movie (hilarious) and, one of my faves - A Fistful of Traveller's Cheques:

RM: I don't think I like this place
    PR: I don't think I like you
RM: (now looking cross) I don't think I heard that!
PR: (looking confused) I don't think I said it
    RM: I don't think.... therefore I AM
Then lots of gun firing followed by Keith Allens great response to complaints about the lack of soft toilet paper at the Hotel:
KA: This is Hotel Bastardos, no softa-toilet paper Hotel Bastardos, you wanna-softa-toilet paper you go to Hotel Gayboy!

Must watch Supergrass sometime - it's only in 14:9 according to the box which is a shame as it contains one of the best cinematic shots I've seen - Robbie Coltrane walking along that harbour with the waves crashing around and over him to the tune of Frankie's Two Tribes. Legend has it the sea was so rough that the rescue boat refused to go out. They weighed Robbie's case down with bricks to help him keep his feet - if he'd got swept off (and one or two of the waves almost do that) then he probably wouldn't have lived to tell the tale!

Thanks for the heads up on this. Just worked my way through and was suprised to find I'd watched them all apart from the 4 men in a car and plane. Brought back some very happy, hazy memories.
