Well after much deliberation i drcided to go for the new G4 iPod. Well what is it like?

Packaging: Good for what it is... appeaently not as good as previous generation, but ill take the £100 drop in price :D

Plug it into my PC.... erm nothing... usb...erm... nothing.. wait 24 hours till i get to my parents (sh*t hot pc). Take my hard drive with me :) .

Well at approx 2.30am 14/08/04 all my music was transferred to the iPod..WOW... Ok the supplied headphones aren't up to much but the fact i have 100 CD's worth of at the touch of a button is fantastic. Fell asleep listening to Rubber Soul. I drempt of being at the Cavern bopping along to the Beetles. Woke up extatic :) . Parents remembered them too (except in real life :) )

Now the big test: What does it sound like in a proper system?

The answer is GRAND!!!!! Having not had a system for the past few months really has taken its toll. Using and old Pioneer (1970's) amp, gale speaker cables, and just a standard 3.5mm jack plug to phono all into a pair of Mission 751F it sounds sweet. No, not the last word in detail or definition, what it does is it brings back the music. So enjoyable. Hard to put into words how much i've missed it. FANTASTIC. I would recommend this to many
people instead of buying a big system straight out. The amp has bloom in all the right places too.

Michael Jackson, Coldplay, Master Ace, Main Source, god damn, at the touch of a button you can have the whole lot. This IS the future

If anyone would like to just hear good music PM me :)

Cheers for all the advice you lot, Im now one happy chappy

    Chris

Make sure you output via the dock and not the top of the ipod for best quality sound, and remember you can use it as a portable harddrive as well.

    iPod Firewire problem...

Well after having a great weekend with the iPod i finally got back home to see if i could solve my connection problems. No matter how much i tried my PC just wasn't playing ball. Remembering a thread that Michaelab started a while back on 'iPod woes' i had a quick read through and took a look on iPod lounge.. It apears that the chipset on my firewire card is incompatable (Via) . If any of you do consider buying an iPod please look into what chipset your PC card has... Look here for some help:

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93405

My card is going back tonight.

I also love the Alarm clock feature. Woke up this morning with 'The girl from Ipanema' (i wish!!!!!)

The playlist 'on the go' is a cracking feature too :)

Here's a little piccie of the docked ipod on the lovely Amp.

further to this the via chipset firewire cards are incompatible with xp, so beware buying one to go in a pc. i think this *may* be resolved with sp2, but when i spent a while trying to upgrade a pc with a pci firewire card, i discovered the problem. the microsoft site just says yes there is a problem and no it wont work, and yes we may fix it at some point in the future.
when buying a firewire card it's kind of tricky to know whether it's a via chipset one or not without seeing it (there will be a via chip), so if you cant find out, avoid just in case.

I've just downloaded the latest 'iPod updater' software which has fixed my Via chipset problem. I run XP also.

    Heres the link:

One thing i will say is that USB2.0 seems a lot more usefull, and widely used and if i knew i was going to have problems like i have, i'd have gone for one of these cards from the outset....

    Cheers

I bought a card from "Conceptronic" which has 2 FireWire sockets and 3 USB2.0 sockets. The advantage of using FireWire with the iPod of course is that it will charge on FireWire whereas with USB2.0 you have to have the mains adapter connected aswell which is a bit of a PITA.

I use my iPod with USB2.0 on my laptop though when I'm away from home. NB: laptop FireWire cards (PC card or built in) don't supply power as they're generally 4-pin and not 6-pin.

    Not strictly true.

You will find that the new G4 Ipod (and the Ipod Mini's) can be charged from USB2.0 as well as firewire, as they both contain the USB2.0 chipset and have been modified to charge from the low current USB2.0 provides. G3 contains the USB2.0 chipset as well, but has NOT been modified to charge. G2 and G1 contain USB 1.1 or 1.2 chipsets, and no mod.

I'm pretty sure thats how it is.

    Cheers.
