    Hi Ian

Thanks very much mate, very kind of you :)

Tunes still abound.. I have the choice of 2 splendid systems...

    1) Sonic T amp and some Mission 761's (attached to the pc)
    2) 5 channel home cinema system that I got FOC with the telly..

    lol!

the good thing about being big system-less is spending the time thinking about what to do next..

For a really "groovy" long slow dance - Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowland was perfect! - What about those "Mercury Eyes" and well what about all those "Missionary Times"

Great CD, some great tracks, but IMO the outstanding one is "Stainsby Girls". Brilliant, never tire of hearing this.

I knew lots of 'Stainsby Girls' in my 'younger days', they really were special Girls and really worth knowing :p

"Nowt wrong" with Chris Rea, especially his older stuff and the Blue Guitars boxed set (11 Cd's).

An old friend of mine, his mother went to Stainsby School for Girls.

She never tired of reminding everyone once she had a drink.

But surely, most men can get misty eyed over girls from any Girls School.............or were they really that special?

You could have resisted, if you'd tried a bit harder. Better luck next time.

    these mad europeans eh..?? :D

    only joking of course!!

reminds me - we did a team building exericse over in belgium a few years back (with work) and I was walking along this tightrope and this hungarian guy was whistling a tune behind me...now, unless there is another more recent version of this (or a completely different song) he was whistling that 80's tune song that started with the line 'hey, whats a matter you, hey, got no respect...'
put a smile on my face anyway... :D

What's wrong with "The road to hell" or "Dare" anyway? Human League's "Hysteria" has its moments as well, though Phil Oakey is Oakey by name, wooden by vocal delivery :)

If you want REAL lack of taste, you should hear "I surrender (to the spirit of the night)" by Sam Fox - on 12inch this sounds ace - pounding synth bass and obligatory 1987 cheese guitar solo.

Then there's always "Let it all blow" by the Dazz Band...

    Remember ...anything by "Dollar" anyone?

Musically right up there with Sam Fox and the Dooleys. Although I have to say I found the lady very attractive!

I believe inbetween an ongoing spat with Bucks Fizz these days David Van Day runs a very successful burger van, I don't think anything on the menu is a dollar!. Thereza's solo career was a little less sucessful as NME pointed out in 1985...

...Left to their own devices, Dollar were always grindingly ordinary. It is this ordinariness which Thereza continues to explore on her first solo album.

It's not terrible but simply lacks the vision and ambition that might make it leap from the speakers and into the brain. She sounds at best like Madonna and at worst like a baby seal. Most of the songs are perfunctory renderings of cliches mated to a studio technique never adventurous enough to be enticing. - Mick Sinclair.

Ouch, where's my DARE album gone?
    :D

Joe Dolce? Bloomin' Nora, now that takes me back.

Going back to good recordings etc, my other half got the Radio 1 Live Lounge CD from the library, and there are some really good sounding tracks on there by people who I wouldn't normally listen to, especially when they're doing covers!. Just really basic and natural sounding (other than the 1st track, which sounds awful), good old Auntie.

I tend not to go for new issues by old favourites; they're usually piss-poor. My most recent purchases were 'Climate of Hunter' by Scott Walker (excellent) and 'Paris 1919' by John Cale to replace a knackered LP version. I have also acquired an MP3 player; with immaculate timing my laptop has given up the ghost and disappeared into tech support limbo.

...actually it was my mate who dissed his vocal "talent" (I came up with the punchline). I actually think he's OK - "Louise" and "Lebanon" are good deliveries from him AFAIAC :)

Has he really shafted his hearing then? Ouch :( Not good.

I liked his use of 3 tape machines early in his career - very cool. :)

The exception to that rule is the excellent new Throbbing Gristle record, which I mark 8/10. Sounds great on a good hifi too, so relevant to this thread. Anyone who's tempted to buy Chris Rea records should buy The Endless Not instead.

Both great records. The Drift, Walker's record from last year, is amazing, you definitely need a copy if you haven't got it yet.
