To be fair I didn't watch her speech, but just read this on the bbc site:

"The Queen also said people should share responsibility to help those less fortunate than themselves. "

Now, tbh I'm not a huge fan of royalty anyway, but c'mon.....she's a greedy old witch who will probably never ever die and gets millions from us and even more from her private (!) income. FFS, surely she should be lambasted for this.....?

Mind you, I should be in bed, I'm tired and suffering from a bad case of over indulgence, bleurggh...

The monarchy actually costs very little.

By all means depose them but what do you replace them with.

    How about President Blair ?

    Your choice.

My view is that it is easy to take the piss but they are by far the best option we got.

    Regards

There are advantages in having a Royal family who are not democratically elected.

They're not politicians who have to slime about with focus groups and the like. They have little real power but at least they can do what they really believe is right, without the need to 'buy' votes.

Also, they are less consumed with and affected by the acquisition of power or money. They're hardly nouveau-riche. They've always had it, they're born with it and they're used to it.

Like all institutions, they're far from perfect, but at least as good as the alternatives, imo.
