I use Quad amplifers mainly, but yes I have a Pioneer SA9800 and a Trio/Kenwood KA1000 which both sound fine.

But yes I have 'lost' a certain something that you clearly still have, and boy is that a relief :)

When can we talk about 16% THD being hi-fi?

No, my funds allow for it and the Nagra fits in with the system but I've yet to hear a CD player sound as convincing as my table....and I can't imagine a cheap old Cambridge is going to better the CDP but I'll give it a go if you think it's going to be better than my turntable set up.

Like I said at the very start, a cheap Cambridge is perfectly capable of beating yours or any other TT if the software allows.
The quality of the CD or vinyl is key.

CD players needn't be expensive. Look at the requirements in terms of the transport and electronics. Name badges and fancy boxes can increase the cost hugely. I can understand someone paying for something that looks and feels stunning, so long as they understand that the cost doesn't automatically translate into better audio performance.

I actually don't understand any part of that.

If my Nagra cannot compete with my TT given the same piece of music, and I don't own a single 180gm or 200gm piece of vinyl, just your standard stuff, then are you saying the Cambridge is better than my Nagra?

I've listened to all sorts of players in my system ranging from the DCS 3 box, Wadia and a Meridian and a Naim unit which was the worst, and non of them came close to the TT in any department.

A competent CD player such as the £250 Cambridge is ultimately capable of better performance than your turntable - or any turntable for that matter because it is a considerable more faithful replay device.
That does not mean that your TT won't sometimes sound better - everything depends on the mastering quality and that can differ considerably with the same piece of music on vinyl and CD.

That you always prefer your TT just tells me that you are addicted to analogue distortion and colouration, which is quite common among audiophiles.
