After a year of research I uncovered and compiled an interesting story from within the loudspeaker industry. You can download my manuscript here, http://www.s-m-audio.com/truth.zip

Steve, an excellent, excellent article - even I could understand despite scraping through O level physics, thanks for sharing and shedding some light on both the manufacturing processes involved and the people that give Beryllium a bad name! This must have taken some time to put together. :)

    Usher Audio says.

We are very happy to have Dr. Joseph D'Appolito as Usher's technical consultant since early 2000. A world-renowned authority in audio and acoustics, he specializes in loudspeaker system design with credentials galore: BEE, SMEE, EE and Ph.D., degrees from RPI, MIT and the University of Massachusetts. As a member of the Audio Engineering Society, Dr. D'Appolito has published over 30 journal and conference papers. His most popular and influential brainchild has to be the MTM (midrange/tweeter/midrange vertical array) commonly known as the D'Appolito Configuration that's used by dozens of manufacturers throughout the world.

    Very good,

I hope you don't mind, but I posted a link to your article over at the Lansing Heritage forum. The top end JBL gear uses Be of course.

Thanks for posting. By the time I'm in my crypt, maybe I'll know enough about physics to understand why I like this hobby.

BTW I just checked and yes, there is a pair of NS-1000 for private sale asking 1600 euros on audiomarkt.de

Very interesting - glad somebody out there acutally researches and inspects manufacturer's claims.

Again, another example of only getting what you pay for!

    excellent.........

I did wonder why they wanted to use such a highly poisous material[especially in dust form] to make a mass market product ....seems fairly obvious now that the actually beryllium content is so low as to be no hazard !

when are you going to take to task all those naughty cable makers that claim 5, 6, 7 and above n purity silver ?

I read it and found it very interesting. Mind you, the following comment at the end did concern me -

Steve Mowry was significantly responsible for the design and development of the Bose 2¾â€ plastic-basket-baffle multimedia AM5 Lifestyle “cube†transducer in 1997-1998

    why?

It establishes some industry credentials, from someone who has worked for a well known brand.
