The MK5 was the one with the stupid moulded seats, the MK4 came out in 1985/86. The MK5 was 1990.

This car must have been great in the mid 80's.

Lol it confused me a bit. My dad has the MK6 (oval clock) N reg Escort and thats an ok car, my dad had to drive 170 miles via the lakes coming back from my uncles funeral and the car was good country roads, it also has good sound proofing. The sills are starting to rust but I am keeping on top of it, it still just cosmetic.

Its a very boring car but thats the whole point, its cheap to run and is reliable.

[IMG] We should get at least 5 years out of it for £1600.

That is a 10 year old car approaching 100k so its clear Ford have improved it a lot for the new version. When I am rich (haha!) I will buy my dad a Focus.

The Ford Escot m4 was a poor design the front lower arms being very week. As usual with Ford they claimed there was no problem until the cars were out of warranty.

Many cars of that era suffered the same probably didn't they though? I remember it was common on Astras for front McPherson struts to simply snap. GM did recall them though and fixed the problem.

Just look at that interior though, its the classic layout and the MK4 was one of the firsr cars to develop it, I think maybe Renult and Saab got there first.

Yes Im thinking of the 1990 model, Im sure it was five. A truely truely dreadful car.

Could have been 50p, I was working on 5billion rubbels which at the time I worked out to be 5p, might have forgot to carry a zero. Either way it was well under the $89 trillion that Austin and the like spent on painting the staff canteen's alone.

That was one thing GM got right. I cannot remeber Astras having a front suspension problem, though the CV boots used to have to be changed regular on the drive shafts.

I always thought that was the Mk III? D'oh! I can confirm that the tape deck in those cars was excellent though - we hired a 1988 Sierra Sapphire with the same head unit as in that photo, and the sound was crisp and clean, and that joystick fader RULED!

Ford have always been very good at stereos, the one is my dads Escort is quite impressive for a car, the rear stock speakers even have tweeters in them! That interior was also a lot better than Tata can manage in 2005.

    This is the MK3 Escort

I nominate the Asia Rocsta. It was worse than a Suzuki X90 and even worse than a Mahindra. As these two cars are both abominations, I think the Rocsta might have it in the bag.

The Rocsta was actually built by Kia wasn't it? But I think they had other ideas and realised the Pride was a half decent car despite its age so didn't want to ruin Kias reputation so branded it Asia Motors.

I can't find it on the web anywhere, but I vividly remember WhatCar! taking out a Skoda Rapid, and deciding it was the closest thing you could get to a Porsche 911 in terms of handling, although maybe not speed!
You're being very unfair to BL as well. They made some truly groundbreaking cars. The Austin and Morris 1300's with their FWD and hydrolastic suspension rewrote the rule book for family cars, this turned into the Allegro. Which had fantastic reviews when it came out. The Marina was a traditional car based on the Morris Minor, it only came out because some people were worried about the more modern ones. The Princess was an example of BL bottling it, it was intended to be a hatchback, but at the last minute they changed their mind. BL's failures have more to do with 70's unions and their resistance to workforce change than crap products.

The best of British came long before the BL days, they just ballsed the lot. It could also be argued that Citreon did it all before anyone else anyway.

Exactly, the Morris Minor was a great car in its day, built like a tank and very reliable, this was before BL existed though, I think it was BMC those days.

The Mini was also a fine car apart from its rust traps.

Rover made some fine cars in the 60's as well. Even the Rover SDI wasn't that bad. My uncle used to have one and he said it was fine as he had membership with both the AA and RAC so every phoned an alternative company every time it broke down.
